While unpacking some boxes I found a few pics of my previous VWs, made me wish I had kept some of them.
I particularly wish I had kept the 62 splitty that I only owned for a week. Long story, we ended up trading it on a (excuse the swearing) Cortina. In about '87 I paid a whole $800 for this splitty, wonder where it is these days? I traded it in Ipswich, QLD, anyone recognise it?
What VWs do you regret getting rid of?
All of them, but just a 62 beetle I had with no, I mean ZERO rust from new. Apart from that it was a piece of shit but I loved it. Sold it to my brother's girlfriend and she wrote it off one week later...
"Tell him 'We've already got one'"
My old karmann ghia-sigh! Plus I sometimes wish that I hadn't customised my first beetle but it's always easier with hindsight.
Maybe there should be another thread "What VW did you buy and regret"
For sell and regret, I had an early splitty camper when I was about 18 ( 27 odd years ago).. Don't remember the year but it was a great bus.. Bought it for $300.. Sold it for $600 to a hippy who was moving to the bush.. Remember thinking I had driven a hard bargain.. No wonder he was smiling as he drove away! Or was that just the weed!
ALL OF THEM
my 58 rag ,imported for the german consulate

rhys
it aint just cool its aircool'd
A mate sold a 15 window for $1500 not so long ago....
When I was a poor student I had a really cool 68 semi auto. I blew the motor, got a new one and changed it to a manual and it used to fly. The suspension unfortunatly broke one day while driving along the road, so off to the wrecker it went and along came my brand spanking new Laser. In hindsight, it would have cost me a lot less to fix the bug as buying a new car gave me thirst for the new car smell, hence I have bought a newbie every 2 years for the last 10 years !!!!
🤘
i really regret not buying a 53 ambulance barndoor (like new not one spec of rust)about 9 years ago for about $300au(500dm) back then(in portugal)....but i still have the photos to tease me every now and then atleast!!
I won't pretent I didn't hate the steel it was made of sometimes, but after driving it for four years everyday, I really miss the character it had. When I sold it my wife cried, and this was the same car that she had her little finger slammed in the door and broken, when we were trying to push start it once.
I'm told the new owner loves it just as much as I did, so at least that's something.
:cry
my manx clone :cry
My first VW
A pristine 64 that a tech teacher inherited from his mother. She drove it like once a week and he only drove it once a month to take to tech to get it tuned.
Sold it to a friend girl friend. A month later some one came through a stop sign and tore the front off.
This thing was mint.
Oh well...... i have discovered supers now :thumb
Futue te ipsum!!!
Thanks Dodge, when I bought it I needed a second car in the house for the girlfriend (now missus) to drive.....saw this one and loved it, didn't know the value of older VWs then. After I parted with the $$ I asked the owner when he was organising the roadworthy (QLD), he wasn't aware of all of this and didn't care as he had the $$, wouldn't even give me a receipt.
I took it to a mechanic for the roadworthy, who failed it because the 'rust work' had been done incorrectly. Oh sure, the rust had been cut out, but instead of putting in new steel, there were just handfuls of fibreglass underneath.
We needed a car straight away for her and had no time for bodywork, etc, no one wanted to help me retrieve $$ from the seller, so I got stuck with this car I couldn't transfer to my name.. Unfortunately we very quickly traded it.....wish I knew back then what I know now.
I remember it drove like a tank (my other car then was a 76 Kombi), fuel gauge was stuffed, and it was very dark and enclosed in the cab. But it would have been sooo cool....sigh...
This one. If only I knew 10 years ago what I know today.
I chucked out a flash kit I took off a 59.....DUMB🙁
My 65 beetle that was turned into a hire car and pranged on the Gold Coast.
Also my 71 Type 3 Fastie TLE - It was the last VW I owned until 3 years ago when my dad gave me his 70 Fastie.
Wish I had never gotten rid of the Fastie, it drove like a dream and absolutely flew.

If you can't laugh at yourself you can't laugh at anyone else! Because life is to short not to LAUGH
My 72 beetle - sorry the one I bought for my bride and still liver to regret it BUT the Bay I now have heals the wounds some what and the missus doesn't abuse me as much
Let me out, When I call my name
IGOR is ALIVE !!!! 😎
My first ever introduction to Vws. A 1964 Microbus delux, purchased back in '91 for $250 in Oakleigh (VIC). Spent 3 yrs restoring with my father, $8000 later, collecting rare bits and pieces. Sold in '94 for $1500, complete with a spare set of unused middle and rear seats. (didn't know what a digital camera was back then, so cant post any pix.
Also, a '59 Kombi with a seized motor that was given away (coz I thought the motor was a problem in '92).
Remember a rust free '61 Twin Cab with all the trimmings and bows at Kilsyth Wreckers that I was offered for $350. Skipped off to the bank to retrieve the money, only to return 1/2 an hour later to find that it had been crushed. At the time, you could go to PickaPart and find 6 Splitties in a row. Oh, thems tha days.
I regretted selling my second VW. 1966 Baja with 10" wheel travel front and rear. Bilstein shocks. Peco Stars with Dick Cepek Fun Country 31" tyres. 1640 with ported heads C35 cam and progressive webber. Big Donaldson Air cleaner and external oil cooler mounted on roof. Interior was all retrimmed also.
Great performing off road Baja which looked schmick. Probably spent $3000 in '80/'81 on it. Sold it in '84 for $800. Found out afterwards that the guy only wanted it to leave at Bulwer on Moreton Island for a weekend basher. It probably rusted away to nothing over the subsequent years.
Brendan
I found a pic of my Double Door Panel that i swaped for a mig welder..........😠
I also sold a 61 DC for next to nuthin.
My first bus, a 63 Micro Bus was sold to a good mate, Don't regret it, but i do miss it. Drove really well and was my daily driver for about 6 years. Since then i have not had a splitty registered on the road 🙁
Mine is the Turquoise one
STEALTH
i really regret selling my 72 dual-cab .It was the best vw i ever owned ,and
i miss it heaps.
It went to a good home though :thumb
i hate myself every day for selling this 75 micro i got it for $50 that right $50 and sold it for $2000 but got it as it had beed dumpt at a mechanic shop for 3 years and never picked up so i rang the original owner and he said pay the guy what i owe him and you can have it ,so i ask the boss of the place and he said that all it was in for was to weld up the rear tow bar and that was $50
he said you will need to tow it 30 mins later i was driving home in it
a battery and some juice and turned one carby right up cause the breather hose rubbers were fucked
i saw it the other day and it has had a huge smack in the arse
and looked hammered and that was only 6 month ago
bahhh haahahhahaha
polished up and looking sweet got a tune and fixed the breater and it drove sooooooo sweet
had to get rid of it as wife said it was the bay or the beetle
