so obviously an open cockpit makes a buggy an easy target for thieves, so what security do you have?

as i am rewiring my buggy i'm thinking 2 kill switches, ignition barrel out of a kombi and a steering wheel lock..

who here uses an imobiliser?

im thinking a foot switch that is painted black to be fixed into the firewall so it is hard to see and a toggle switch on the dash as the kill switches. all my dash switches will be unmarked so itll be a challenge for any would be thief to figure out which one does which and what combination...

Kill switches as a whole are generally a waste of time on a buggy as the motor hangs out the back and all you need to do is jumper some wires from the alternator and you can start the car, no matter how many kill switches you have.

A hidden electric fuel pump that has a kill switch will make it a bit harder to drive away with.

Taking the rotor button out is a good way to disable the car, unless you have a VW savvy thief with a rotor button in his tool kit.

I have a Auger ProLock steering wheel lock for when I park my car someone a bit shady. I put my steering on full lock and put the steering lock on, so it makes it hard to even push it anywhere (except in circles).

If you are one of those paranoid people that is constantly worried someone is going to steal your car, then you shouldn't own a buggy (or a motor bike for that matter)

If someone wants your buggy they can pretty much pick it up and walk away with it so they are hard to secure.

If you have a tacho fitted you could always run a wire from the coil through a switch to earth. When you switch it to earth the motor will crank but not fire...."stupid volkswagens won't fuggin start.....I'll move on to something better".....:thumb

i like your idea pyro, but i'd never remember to turn it off!
ive got a brant immobilizer in mine. insurance company wanted it in before they'd let me in. does fuel and engine, and doors if i had them.

but yeah, if anyone really wanted it, they could just let off the handbrake and give him a push.

I have a Rhino remote alarm on my buggy with electric locks on the steering and glovebaxes, as well as full disabling and shorting of almost everything on the car. It would make it a real nuisance for a would be thief.

When it goes back on the road, it's also getting locking handbrake and gear lever and clutch disabler. Also putting hub locks on the front wheels (custom hardened pin that locks into the front disc vents, operated by a solenoid).

The only way to move it will be to pick it up from the rollbar, while it screams it's head off... LOL

My cousin and his friend built a nasty alarm system for the mate's car. It allowed someone to enter the car, although with a bit of trouble, but once they were inside the doors locked again (no lock knobs inside, so couldn't unlock it), a siren went off inside the roof lining right about the driver's seat screaming at 140db which bursts your ear drums, and 30,000 volts was zapped throught the seat and steering wheel via thin wires woven into the seat cover and steering wheel cover. So, if you ignored the warning sticker and broke in, as soon as you closed the door you'd be rendered unconscious, bleeding from deaf ears and if you had a mate outside the car he couldn't do much for you (unless he broke the window, but people could be watching already so he'd probably just bolt).

When they finished installing and testing it, they went home to the mate's place for dinner and left the car parked in the driveway. After dinner they went back out so the mate could drop my cousin home and the car was gone. They forgot to set the alarm... They later found the shell stripped of everything including the alarm they had devised....

car alarms... there are some great ones out there like the TOAD smoke, if the alarm goes off and is not shut down the correct way as soon as the engine is started it lets of a smoke canister in the car, When i first saw this system being demo'd at the london motor show it took about 2/3 seconds for the smoke to reach me and i was about 15 foot away from the car and shit did it make u cough. they banned it in the uk tho worried it mite kill or hurt the bastard trying to steal your car...

the other one i have seen was when i was in south africa, car kacking is a major problem out there so someone designed an alarm that counters that .. how it works is you have a panic button fitted to the steering wheel and or gear stick. just under the drivers and passenger doors are two very small pipes that point up at about a 45 degree angle... when the button is pushed it basicly acts as a flame thrower shooting a 12 foot flame out of the pipes burning who ever is tryin to jack your car. this system is also wired into the alarm so if the siren goes off it burns who ever is near by.... once again just about everywhere bar south africa would not allow such a system and banned it before anyone had the chance to have it put into cars.....

the horrible truth is if someone wants your car no matter what alarms or kill switchs etc u have in place a pro will have it.... all an alarm and such is doing is stoping the joy riders and chance theif... yea i know 60% or car thefts are joy rides and such so it does do its job.

I normally have the buggy parked either at my work carpark (secure) or at home or else I'm driving it. Basically though buggies stick out like a dogs balls so thieves would really ,and I mean really ,have to be pretty stupid to nick one though they're not known for their intelligence. As for an earlier suggestion about removing the rotor arm from the dizzy my mate had a cortina 1600E back in the UK some years back and they had to be the easiest car to nick so every evening he'd remove the rotor arm and no kidding about 5 or 6 times he'd call me up to go looking for his car as somebody had got in to it a when it hadn't started they had tried to push it away! We'd find it a couple of streets away generally, flat battery and the choke knob lying on the floor (it wasn't connected). We half expected to one day find a thief dead with heart attack but alas never did.

the three best things iv'e heard of were an imobiliser that lets the car start, but cuts out after 60 seconds (feels like something is wrong with the car instead of feeling like a security device). a switch used in dual fuel set ups that usualy cuts out the fuel line and opens gas ( in our case it would just shut off fuel), and the coil being wired up to line up with your crotch in the drivers seat, with a switch to deactivate it (you would only forget to turn it off once, and great fun when you ask your mates to move your car for you)

hahaha man that was some excellent replies.... i'll share a few ive seen while lookin on the meyers manx website....

cigarette lighter kill switch. instead of wiring up a cigarette lighter as normal. wire it to a relay and use it as a kill switch. push in for on and out for off.. the last thing a thief would do...

coil kill switch so the engine cranks but wont start 'fuckin volkswagen'
