ok in june i have a cousin coming over from the uk and i was wondering if it would be legal to get him to bring a suitcase of gear over for me (vw parts) not drugs!!! and do you reckon it would be cheaper??
cheers mattie
stuipid beetle breaks everytime i drive it.....
Depends:
If its over the limit, then I am sure customs will get him for duty.
If the parts are available here (and most probably are now) the cost may not be worth it due to weight (don't forget he will be bringing his own suitcase of clothes and stuff, and excess baggage costs aren't pretty), customs etc versus just buying it from someone in Aust.
And finally, what bits?
If you are after some rare bits that the guys (and girls) here don't stock, then I would guess it may be worth it, otherwise, probably not.
Anyone else?
'Ah, whatever................'
there's also the currency to consider. soemthing might only cost a few pounds, but in aussie dollars, it'd work out to be the same, more, or hardly worth it.
when i went to the classic in california last year i brought back about 6 grand in parts in suit cases i didnt declare a thing when asked i just said they were old vw parts so they didnt open the bags i was probably very lucky but the money i saves payed for the trip( had to pay excess bagage)
i think they just the limit to $900 per person without having to pay customs
some else almost got pinged but he had lots of the same item
first thing u need to find out is who is he flying with as different airlines have different weights... i always fly singapore airlines and theres is 32 kilos. now i have brought stuff over every time i go back to visit family and friends and have never had a problem, i worked out that is you box it up of bag it up so it will not fit on the little weight thingy they have more offen than not they dont even weight it and just pass it through. i have brought all sorts of goodies with me and have never had a problem with any off it to date(touch wood)
as someone else said a lot of things just aint worth bringing back as people like roy are doing a stand up job of gettign the stuff over at a good price but for the rare stuff its well worth doing
steff.........................................
Life with out a v-dub is no life at all!!!!!
i think the key thing is calling it old car parts and if they ask how much it cost say $10 rather than $1000
over a certain amount and they charge tax i think
good luck
No Mr Customs Officer, they're just sentimental bit's and pieces. They were off my Uncles old car, and I promised him I'd bury him in it, so now I'm stuck trying to weld him a coffin".
"What? You want me to pay Duty on this junk? You must be kidding. Don't mess with my Uncle's ghost man! He died of dyssentry".
If you cant make up some bullshite story, and then make it work, you're very welcome with all your cash at my place next poker night!
hey skew is that the new mrs doubtfire in your pic
We got caught on the maximum weight on cases, had two cases and one was over the top health and safety limit for their baggage guys, so we had to do a bit of swappoing about at the check in ay heathrow. MIght had something to do with the 19 inch flat screen monitor I had in the case. Didnt charge us anything extra though

I rocked up at Sanfransisco airport with the top 20 inches of a ragtop bug tucked under my arm.
I had wrapped it in thick Cardboard to prevent anyone or anything geting hurt or damaged by it,
JAL was who I was flying with and they said no problem but it would cost me $120 U.S. for Exess bagage,
I balked at that because I was nearly broke after 2 months in California, I would have had not enough money left over to catch a taxi in Japan where I was stopping.
I could picture myself stranded at Narita Airport with my ragtop and not enough cash to catch a cab and not any useful Japanese Language skills to even organise anything.
I also think I may have been charged the same or worse again to go from Japan to Australia or even worse have the Japanese airport say, "Oh No, Too Big, Too Big" and then lose the roof clip and or my flight home.
So I got my Brother to Fed - EX it to me through his mate at staff prices, it still cost me nearly $300 AUS for postage.
Even with all this drama I still ended up with it for a better price than I could have bought one here, and although I couldn't find anyone with a ragtop here before I went to California, I found everybody had them for sale after I returned, but still for more money.
You could always ship them with a company like "Cargo Clear freight International" in Brisbane they will look after the stuff real good Like they did this tool Box I Brought back with the Chev, They pretty much told me tough luck straight to my face, you can make a complaint but nothing will ever come of it. They Said, Smug as.
They backed into it with a forklift.

when I came back from the U.K. in 2001 I had probably $3k of parts in my bag.
The chick at customs said " they're only Volksy parts, they can't be worth that much can they?"
I walked straight on through.😀
