im looking to put something with a bit more *ZING!* in my cherry bug, and think a 1776 might be the go...
what am i looking at for a good condtion one? (not new... i know i cant afford that!)
or...
whats a good setup to get some extra zing from a 1600 tp?
im going to have to get a new engine anyhoo (cherrys current workings are getting pretty tired and killing plugs, running shitty and leaking oil) so id like to hear pros and cons of both, and what you would recommend 😀

thanks in advance 😀

1776 are a nice strong engine, you don't need anymore power than what they give, my wifes type 3 wagon runs a 1776 and i love driving it. I have a 1776 to stick in my ute.. with some nice carbies they hammer. I picked mine up for $1800 so you will probably be paying around the $2K mark for a second handy. 1640 is also another one you might want to look at and you can usually get cheaper, they have a bit more pep then a 1600 and are strong as.

But can't go past a 1776.

Or if you have some spare cash go the pobjoy steroids 1916, then you can take it to the drags.

to get your engine rebuilt into a 1776, with consumables replaced and new twin carbs, extractors, cam etc and stuff like that probably looking at 4 to 5k
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

The motor i have in my new bug is interesting

It is a 1916 built by Peter Shelley

http://www.cvwc.com.au/menu_page.htm

This motor is basically a 1600 with 94piston and cylinders and a slightly different cam. It still runs a stock exhaust and carb.
From all the dyno days i have been to a health 1600 will do 40 ponies at the wheels at best.
Mine put out 50. That is a decent 25% increase over stock and i reckon there is another 5 ponies if i just add a decent merged header. This takes it to an extra 33% over stock.

It is very noticeable.

When i bought the car it came with all the receipts and the motor was $2700.

My previous car had a 1776. Although that made 60 odd ponies and was definitely more powerful it was no where near as smooth and it also had webers.
I LOVE Webers but they do require more tweaking (cleaning jets, adjusting linkage) Not a lot - but more than the single.

Fuel economy is the same with all my motors. 8km/L in the city and 10 - 12ish on the free way in a heavy Super.

The 1916 also runs heaps cooler.

For a daily driver this 1916 is the best bang for buck i have driven

if i was planning to keep my single weber (40dcn) whats the best engine to suit?
its sitting on my 1600tp right now and it chews up fuel like...something big and chewy (??)
pros and cons of single or twin setups?

looks like a 1776 is the go, hope its not too hard to find one once i get my tax return 😀

In terms of the carbs, a single will give you better economy and will be a hell of a lot easier to set and maintain! Just make sure the mixture is spot on! Chewing fuel now is probably due to the tired donk, maybe running a little rich, and depends how hard she's being driven. Twin carbs are probably a complication that you dont need - at the moment anyway!

Im sure you'll get differing opinions to this though!

My only other suggestion is to know what your buying, or know the quality of work being done by the monkey you choose!! 😉

Happy Tinkering!!

Starbug,

What are you prepared to spend on a 1776 long block with new stock heads, new pistons & cylinders, new 26mm oil pump, lightened flywheel, C-35 cam, rebuilt line bored case with stock crank, new bearings, tapped for full flow, drilled and tapped for case temp sender, less than 500k's on the clock and if you live in brisbane you can take it for a run.......?

All the other components are going towards a stroker (carbs, exhaust etc)

I would say twin webbers would use less than a single. Mine always got ridiculous economy due to the fact that it only takes small increases in throttle to get the response from the motor, single takes alot more throttle and the delay(load response) is where the fuel is not being used efficiently.

Just what I have always found, not to say I am at all an expert, and others may have different results...both with IDF's and 48dellorto trijets....my hot 2076 used less that my mates stock 1500. They also used less than Kadrons on my 1916 and the twins single throats on the type 3's.(heavy car).

What are the prices of these engines???

Wouldnt it be cheaper, more reliable, more economical, cheaper for parts, more powerful, to put a suburu motor in it???

Cheers

The question is How long is a piece of String ???

your costs would depend on what you have that is usable.... more than likely your crank case is buggared ... so you might only have crank n rods n maybe heads n junk the rest .

Its an endless answer sorry but you need to know what you want to run on the engine,... Carbies extractors ignition etc etc heads
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

I have a 1600Tp that has just been built, it has all new bearings, new oil pump, new bearings etc, i want $950 as is,
OR i can turn it into a 1776 with a beefy cam, or stock cam,
90.5 pistons and barrels, and jet out the stock carby to suit the motor, this works very well as i had exactly the same motor running in a 76 bug and that was a BIG difference to the standard 1600 i can do that for$2200 with a stock cam and any extra for the bigger cam,
I can also fit it and get it running in your car for$200,
I am a 4th year apprentice mechanic who works every day on Volkswagens.
so let me know if your interested,
