as a treat for passing my exams this semester (lets hope!), im going to be buying myself a spanky new ipod.
now, instead of buying my cherry bug a spanky new stereo (the old one belonged to my friend and is now back in his car) i was just going to get a cheap-o stereo unit and hook up my ipod with some nice big speakers.
alas... most of the ipod stereo kits i have seen need a cigarette lighter to run them... and my cherry bug has not got one!
so, has anyone here hooked up their ipod to their dubs stereo, how did you do it, and how does it sound? any info is much appreciated!!
thanks😀

If your talking about the type that picks up the signal thru your FM stereo, I to looked at this as an alternative to a cd player.
Haven't done it yet but was told that the sound quality depends on the quality of your FM radio and signal. Apparantly there are moves afoot to use this technology to do away with car cd players.
All you will have is an FM radio with a USB port....or so i'm told.
I've hooked mine up directly to an aux input on my stereo, most new stereos don't have that tho. You have to have the ipod volume set to max to get anything out of it. Sounds excellent! as for power I just use the ipod battery, not too hard to wire in a ciggy socket if ya want one!
Cheers
Marc
Or you can run an amp and just plug your Ipod into that. The amp is wired into the battery and that takes care of your speaker power. The ipod runs off its own battery and you can get a special dual output cord to plug the ipod into the amp with.
At the moment I am running my ipod with a 'I'm a speaker'. Its a little case that I carry around and has speakers on one side. Sound quality isn't shit hot but better than nothing.

Alpine has a neat interface that connects any dock connector ipod to any alpine AI-NET head unit made from 2004 onwards. I bought a cd tuner headunit, and alpine ipod interface bundled together for $500.00 from precision installations in sydney. it works a treat. Driect digital line level link, charges the ipod and you navigate the ipod from the cd head unit. Essentially the ipod is just a mass storgae device.

That is excellent. I have an ipod and use it with the iTrip and it sucks when traelling form city to city cause you constantly have to change to another station. I currently use 91.1 I think, has anyone found a station that works from North to South NSW without interfeence?
When my wife and I go travelling we take the Subby and i am in no mood to remove the console to check if the stock subby stereo has inputs at the back, so the iTrip is good enough.

turbo... let me get this straight...if i was to just hook it up to an amp, it would power the speakers and the ipod, therefore, i could do away with a stereo? sweeeeeet!!
if its possible to do that i'll just get a cheap am/fm radio for a stereo (for those times you just neeeeed to listen to triple j) and run the ipod thru the amp!!
i'll have a look in the city tommorow and ask around about amps and stuff... any recommendations? nothing fancy, just enough to get some tunes going 😀

Hi Guys and Girls,
You will notice that all 2005 Clarion headunits are Ipod compatible that the adaptor unit will not be available for a few more months yet. Alternatively as already mentioned you can use the Auxilary RCA inputs most Clarion headunits have, I use another brand of MP3 player and this method works great.

starbug.. no, you got it wrong, an amp will not power the iPod. In order for the iPod to get power you need actual voltage going through the actual power entry (at the bottom of the iPod).

You can get a component for the ipod called the " I Tuner".
You can have any old crap radio (Providing its got good sound quality) and you can tune into the ipod. The tuner connected onto your ipod acts as a close range broadcast station (Range can be about 80 metres from the ipod, but I would imagine the ipod would be in your car at the time). The range may be more, but this is what I got when bush bashing in my mates acerage.

stuipid beetle breaks everytime i drive it.....
hokay then, whats the best fm trasmitter.
i'd love to have the computer running winamp to a fm transmitter so then not only could the lounge room pump (as it does at the moment but by wire) but the sunroom, patio, shed and back yard all pumping in stereo & loud at the same time... woo hoo.
its only a standard house block. is 20m range for quality transmission asking too much???

I use an iTrip to send the signal to the Tuner, you just set the frequncy you want, all pretty simple stuff. Works very well and makes the iPod much more like value for money.
Also, you can get off eBay for like $50, a transmitter that does the same thing with a USB connector on it, they have 12 volt power leads and you just stick a flash drive on it, or one of those iPod wanna be MP3 Players. Then you can leave it hidden in the car and plug yer flash disc in whenever you feel like it.
It's a cheap alternative if the aim is to get MP3s in the car.
You might also look at getting a MP3 stereo unit or even a DVD/VCD unit off eBay. I mention this, cause with a bit of canny shopping, you can spend about the same and get a TFT screen, DVD player and then burn 4.7 gigs of music and watch your fave flicks.
Depends if you really really need 20 or 40 gigs of tunes when driving. My iPod usually has about 5 gigs on it, and that a good 3 days or solid listening.
Depends what geek-gadgets floats ya boat and yer budget. If you don't need an iPod as a 'walkman' then you might think about spending yer loot in other ways.
How about a FTT sunvisor while you are at it, all this stuff is getting dirt cheap on eBay these days.

looks like the itrip is the way... as i dont want to be spending good money on a stereo unit if im going to be spending good money on an ipod... best i spend that money on more beetle bits.
thanks for the info guys 😀

Starbug. You dont need a headunit at all. Save your money and buy a decent amp. You dont need an Itrip or any or the stereo stuff unless you want radio. I have looked into this as I dont want a visible stereo in my 54. I am mounting the amp under the back seat which is connected to the battery and this powers the amp and speakers. The Ipod runs on its own battery and still has to be charged as if you were listening through headphones etc.
Talk to the guys at JB HiFi, or somewhere like Jarcar electronics, they will have the cords you need. You can also get a digital radio tuner from Dick Smith etc. that plugs into the top of you ipod and turns it into a radio. The apple ones seam to give off lots of static and are fairly expensive. Hope this helps,

Guess I'll trade in the 64 beetle in for a brand new BMW then. Probably the cheapest option.
😀
or you could just take the stereo out of one. it don't have to be the whole thing... :duh

Forget everything you've read!
The iTrips and other such things are garbage compared to what I'd reccomend.
The best option is getting a semi-decent stereo with a CD stacker input, you then purchase an interface cable from
http://peripheralelectronics.com/ipod2car/index.shtml This powers the ipod, sends the track information back to the head unit and sends the key commands from the head unit to the ipod. IE: hide the ipod in the glovebox and forget about it.
You have get a cable thats specific to your head unit and they are a little bit expensive, but if you compare it to the cost of a CD stacker its a bargain.
Its also by far got the best functionality. Cost... ~ $200 USD + PnH
PS. other option if you can find a H/U with CD stacker input, but no Aux. RCA input, you can often buy a cable from the manufacturer which plugs into the stacker connector and then just gives you 2 x RCA in's (as most stackers only return analog line level audio signal anwyays).
This does look good, however, an iPod is ~$300~$700 then ~$200 plus semi decent stereo... you could be spending over $1000 depending on iPod and stereo.
But for a budget solution a temporary cigarrete lighter assy hooked up, an iPod specific cigarrete lighter charger, an amp and speakers seem a better option.

octa knows how im feeling about this... a $1k setup for my in car entertainment just isnt an option right now (extra money better spent on new engine/carbies/paint job)
and as i will be using my pod for things other than car stereo, then its best i keep it simple.
thanks for all the info and suggestions... i'll be looking into the amp and lighter installation. i'll post up how it goes in the future 😀
cheers!:party
