I have traced back 4 full generations, and half of the 5th(only on my Dad's side), but I am now stuck. What I wanted to do, was trace all my bloodlines out of Australia.

My great great grandfather Fraser was from Scotland, that was easy to trace even though I didnt even know where my father was born. What is hard, yet should be easy is the rest of them as they were born in Australia. I can get great grandparents birth certificates no probs, which shows about the great greats, but finding the actual records for these older births is just not possible. Pissng me off that I am spending money on searches and not getting anything for it.

Did Australians just not keep records until late 1800's or what????

Keep on going. My dad has traced back to 1610 (when records began in that part of Belgium) for his side of the family. It took a stroke of luck and many many years to go past 1850, but it worked.

Eventually, I'll be getting the family tree, and I hope to make it a little more complete over time.

Are you using the genelogical society to assist you? They helped dad a lot. If you're interested, the Mormon's have a great family tree research web site.

I traced back to my geat great grandparents, in Russia.

Then I hit a brick wall, you think Australias records are hard to find, In Russia they were destroyed on purpose.

I found my great Grand mother was born in Chita, where Gengis Kahn came from and My great Grand Father came from near Lake Pern, but there is no record to be found beyond this,

I keep my finger on the pulse to see what else I can find but not much for the last 8 years.

You can trace scottish records online, but costly. You need to buy $14 worth of credits (30) up front. But you only get 1 week to use them before you have to pay again. If you DO pay again you are able to use your remaining credits. So I have 21 credits but cant use them until I buy another 30. Will have to wait and see if I have any other scottish people I need to search before I pay up again.

For now, everyone apart from the Fraser line were Australian born between 1861 and 1874. Probably escaped convicts. No wonder I live in Warilla, its in me blood. If I could find their birth records everything would be sweet.

My maternal aunt did a fair bit of work for that side of the family.

Got back to the mid 1600s for some areas.

Among the interesting things she found:
A couple of "unknown" fathers
A "mother unknown" on the birth records - WTF?
A mercenary soldier!

On the paternal side there has been less work done.
Exiled from Ireland was the standout! I wanna shake that legends hand...

I was very excited searching on naa to find a relative who died at Gallipoli. Only half hour later I realised that years were out, must have made an incorrect mental calculation. Now I have nothing exciting. I come from a long line of servants and labourers.

My grandfather served in New Guinea in the works company, and went AWOL 3 times. Thought that was good, a resentment of authority in the family, even way back then. MUST be convict heritage 🙂

Other interesting thing is that when my family plants its roots, it stays there. Draw a cirlcle around the goldfields of victoria and there will be 3 generations. Nobody travelled more than 100kms except for my father in 1960's. He set off on a round Australia trip, got to Port Kembla and stopped.

I think where alot of us Australians hit hiccups is where you ancestors (like mine) actually were convicts, and arrived in the early - mid 1800's. Not all of the convict ships registers are easy to find, or complete, or accurate - and that is just asking for trouble.

I'm lucky enough that a great aunt from another branch of my family went through alot of effort in the mid 70's to trace ours back, and I think it goes back to late 1700's early 1800's. At any rate, my paternal ?greats grandfather was a convict who made a political protest and destroyed a thrashing machine (like a combine harvester I guess) as a protest against mechanisation of the farming workforce.

Oh thats the other thing - my grandfather served in the Airforce in WW2 in PNG as a radio technician at the bases around Port Moresby - entirely plausible that he met your grandfather over there.

on my mummys side there is a family tree book , brought out in the 70's i think. Anyway it dates back to 1500's full family tree to our family now. Best thing was i found out i am the next heir to the berry pomeroy castle. As their surname was Pomeroy. Sweet!
