I want to put a 2 litre in our ghia and am not sure whether to use a kombi engine with an upright engine kit fitted and the kombi gearbox or the porsche 914 engine and porsche gearbox.

Has anyone done either of these? Any comments?

the Porsche enging is a kombi engine just about. Minor differences with head studs etc. It just has more mumbo in stock form.
Easy (well just add $$$) to make the kombi motor the same. The purist engine number nazi will know the difference bit....

The Porshe box is a differnt matter.
Yes - it is heaps better (well just add $$$)

So can you hook up the Porsche box to a Kombi motor or are there alterations you have to do to make it fit?

i have the kombi engine with upright conversion in chaos with the stock sbug box and it works well enough but i am thinking of going to the L bug box due to the fact its stronger again. the stock box side plates flex a little when i dump it at about 2g

Thanks for that guys. It's a shame the Porsche box is longer as I don't want to alter the chassis. Might try the L bug box though.

The Porsche 914 options -
I have read of people in the UK having porsche gearboxes etc.... and engines in Beetles etc as 914s are more common over there and the rust probably eats 914s the same as it does most other cars.... and engines and gearboxes are easy to find and therefore... much cheaper.....
Best of Luck...

1303S gearbox and type 4 engine sounds good..... to Me.....

cheers
