Found a 1958 Beetle, originally black in colour. Needs some serious work but has original 36hp motor, semiphores, pul door handles, bat steering wheel, original red vinyl intereor, has plenty of rust, also has some unique features. It has little lights on the front guards where indicators are on later models. These lights are metal and chrome plated looking like a bullet and have a little badge on top (King of the road - LUCUS). Also has an amp guage beside a fuel guage under the tseering column. Is this normal. Its also has a german compliance plate....... Is this perhaps worth collecting or let it go. The W deck lid is missing 🙁, and its had later model rear guards fitted with the idicators in the tail lights. Also, the indicator switch is on the right hand side of the steering column. Arnt they normally on the left? Any help would be good.
Cheers

58 Beetle wouldnt have a W deck lid, and indicator arm can easily be flipped to the other side. the other Stuff, with out pics I cant tell..
N!
Blue...the indicators on top of front guards came later than 58...if it has or had semaphores...then the guards are not original...the amp gauge an addition as well....fuel gauge probable an addition
Yes the ice pick door handle original for a 58....
Bel had been modified a little....later tail lights.....you just have to take them back if you want them stock standard...fill in the indicator holes on front guards.....find new dash plate where amp guage is...etc....
If you want the fuel guage for convenience then keep it....it's not a sin...
Hey,
the lights on the guards are not actually indicators. They are like a safety light (parkers) and appear to be original. The fuel guage and amp guage are mounted under the dash in a plate around the steering column. The guages apear to be the same sort that you would find in a early split kombi. (fuel guage that is) and the bracket appears to be an early period like acessory. It does not appear to be an after thought. Also, the vents on the front where the horn is mounted. This only has one hole. The hole is on the passenger side, the drive side has the chrome horn grille trim still but there is metal behind it. Also, the bonnet release is on the passenger side, not the driver? The roof lining appears to have been made out of a hession bag like material. Its very grainy texture, and appears to be original.
Why would the compliance plate be in german, shouldnt it be in australian?

sorry, the decklid is missing and it just has a run of the mill lid with the larger number plate light - popes nose not there. Rear guard on driver side is different, passenger is still the original, but as said has the housings for the bigger tail lights. The only guages mounted on the dash are a speedo. nothing else, has a full glovebox, and grab handles that come in a deluxe car. and all chrome trim, wolfsberg badge on the front too.
Something unique about it, just cant figure what thou.

indicators are off an english car of the era, probably Austin/Morris (hence the Lucas, Prince of Darkness badge) Gauges are probably from around the same era, so has period extras, good parts car if price is right. Hope this helps.
Problem: I got probed by Aliens last night...............and I think I like it!.........E.T call ME.
Are you sure the lights weren't LUCAS. An English light company. Sounds like small truck lights mounted to the guards. You can get hella and bosch ones like what you describe. Not worth anything as far as i know. Change it back to original.
And this baby defintiely shouln't have a W decklid.
Still sounds like a nice car.

...pics would be good if you can get them...
How much are they asking...would you want a parts car...if a lot of rust...is it worth restoring...how good is the none rusted areas...interior...rest of body....
Its rust rusty. 200 bucks is the asking price. I thought seeing it had semiphores, bat wheel, good door cards etc it would be worth the 200 atleast.
Only prob is i dont really need a parts car.

200 bucks is top dollar for a pair of phores, id pay that for a working pair with good lenses, if i realy needed them.. and hey, if i got a car, motor and all those other bits included, id be pretty chuffed.. 😉
..rape it for parts, call sims, then hit ebay.. 😠..
