My girlfriend and I had packed the kombi, ready for a 3 month round trip to SA....
I had packed the roof racks with things, ie, spare water, gasbottle, some tools, etc, and covered with a tarpaulin.
30 km's out of Wellington NSW, the damn thing flew off.....
I had double checked all attaching brackets prior to leaving, things were fine. However I did not count on the ferocious force of an oncoming Semitrailer , traveling at 100km's......

The whole unit was ripped from the roof, and went tumbling along the road behind us. We were doing 90km's . Thankfully, we had no one behind us, you can all imagine the horror which could have unfolded if we were being tailed by another car!!!
The items in the racks were not recovered (scattered far and wide over a nearby paddock), the roof rack was bent beyond recognition....
The roof rack was the type that sits over the driver and passenger.
So to all those that wish to install and actually use a rack, I recommend you all bolt the damn thing to your bus, don't rely on the brackets, or better still, forget the rack, you probably wont even use the shit in it for the whole trip. We certainly didn't miss the stuff we lost..........

If you want to turn Kombi handling into understeer put a hard floor in standard roof rack.
If you use rack make sure that air can "pass through" and escape from back. Tarp over top OK

This is a pic of the rack I use on our Baja Bus when camping, its attached in 6 places, and is what we also mount the side awning to. It allows us to take enough camping gear away for 5 people and is strong enough for the Offroad abuse I give it.
