is there something i have done wrong or am i fucked and need a new powersupply or some rubbish like that?
HELP !!!!!!!!:duh
check your power points/powerboard.
its probably a power supply thing 🙁
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
tower plugged into the computer? what? the tower is the big rectangular peice of shit that isnt turning on.... the one where ya put ya disks into..... what other cord are you talkin about?
Soz, my mistake. Okay, now the reason why ur tower might not be working is cause of the power cable behind not being plugged in properly, or is fucked, or the power board ur plugging into is fucked.
Worse, it could be the button on the front of the tower which is damaged, or the actual power box in the computer could be stuffed. Sometimes the case, but doesn't happen to often.

the standby light is on the monitor, the tower will NOT even make a noise when i hit the button. im guessing my powersupply is fucked, but im not too sure..

Not that i can see....... just a normal looking switch?
if your game you could open it up there not that complicated, if its a later model pc (less then 5 years old) it'll be ATX (when you click shutdown the pc turns itself off) which could mean that you ither have a dodgy powersupply or motherboard (Thing everything else plugs into) you can have a look inside the case and check to see if the connectors are still attached to the motherboard and if your lucky some motherboards have a power indicator so you can see if powers getting to it (even though the pc is off the motherboard gets standby power.)
Hope this helps
Yeah, likw Quoll said. Check the power button is plugged into the motherboard properly if it's an ATX based PC. If you have more than one button on the front of your PC, you can swap the connectors over and use the other button to see if the PC starts. Or just use a screwdriver on the jumper pins. I did that for months on my PC before it had a case.
Check this too. when you press the power button, do you see a very momentary flash of the power light? If you do, don't press the power button again, unplug the PC and get a new power supply. When they do that, keep pressing the button and the PS goes BANG!
Been through a few power supplies.
I won't ask you to check the fuse in the power supply. That can be dangerous. A lot of them are inside the supply and require removal of the power supply lid.
We know the power cables are ok, because you said This: Powerboard > PC > Monitor. And monitor's light comes on.
However, this does not mean the power supply is good. The monitor power out is hardwired directly to the power in on most power supplies.
Shame you're so far away. Could have had a look for you.
If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.

Other items that could be at fault are the CPU, RAM or motherboard.
Usually if it is the power supply the lights on the computer will come on momentarily and then turn off. If no lights what so ever then it is either CPU, RAM or motherboard. Without multimeters it would be difficult to tell which would be at fault.
If the computer is a name brand like Compaq, Hewlett Packard, Packard Bell then a power supply could cost more than what the computer is worth. As the said name brand computer use propriety items such as power supplies, then to buy a new power supply you can only get it from them. Secondhand power supplies you can get from ebay.
I recently check the price for a power supply to fit a Hewlett Packard computer that was 3 years old, I was quoted $185.12 ex G.S.T. plus freight.
If it is a not a brand name computer then you should be able to get a power supply for around the $40.00 mark
If it is not the power supply but something else get a quote before having repairs done. A new computer box with all the trimmings can be purchased for around the $500.00 mark
I just want to get it up and running for my old girl to occasionally get online and to play games.
will take it to a mate who knows his shit.... if i have to.... i am having a bonfire in a coupla weeks, im sure i can make it burn :P
As mentioned in an earlier post by pod
have a look at the pack of the computer, then at the power supply unit where you pug the power cable into the computer, there may be a black toggle switch. If there is it may be turned off.
How long was it since you last used this computer?? As you said "i have put my old desktop back together".
If it has been some time since the computer was started the CMOS battery may be dead. If this is the case then it a cheap item to fix less than $5.00
