You have to be careful of Simca Vedettes and turbo charades etc

Should have included the 6 cylinder cars as well:blush

There is another list for 6 Cylinders
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/downloads/0605_6cyl_vehicles.pdf/
Personally I think it is a stupid piece of legislation. By defining the cars that they can't drive it creates a lot of loopholes. Plus it is just plain absurd. It is OK to drive a Mazda RX8 or Honda S2000 but not a Daihatsu 3 Cyl Turbo or a Merc C180 Kompressor. The latter are hardly fast cars. Anyone who knows about cars knows that Forced induction does not automatically mean performance. FFS even a Volvo low blow turbo is prohibited?????
I think it is purely legislation that the Today tonight/ACA watching masses wants to hear. there has actually been a consistant drop in P Plater deaths over the past few decades, even though the media has reported a massive surge of crashes in skylines etc. over the last year.
One thing is for sure, is that releasing these lists is a lot cheaper than overhauling the licencing system and improving our roads - creating a long term solution that will make a difference.

All Golf GTi Turbos and new Beetle turbos and Passats are also prohibited vehicles for P & L platers
as long as i can drive my bus :-D
Restricting engine power is plain stupid, along with reducing speed limits. These measures are not going to stop people dying. I saw a male P plater driving a Hyundai excel (hardly a powerhouse in any standards) and the car was full of his loud yobbo mates, all hanging out the windows. This guy was driving so fast that he almost rolled the car when cornering.
It should be more about driver education and harsher penalities and I am not talking about demerit points for going 3km over the speed limit either ! (Don't even get me started on that topic!!!). In this society, it is seen that having a drivers licence is a RIGHT and not the priveledge that it is.
🤘
It’s a step in the right direction.
IMO driver education creates overconfident egos rather than skilled drivers. 3 years of on road training in a shit-box will give them a lot more driving skills. The list isn’t perfect in a number of ways but it’s a start. We accept the motorcycle restrictions, cars should be no different.
No it a step in the wrong direction!!! im devestated about it! I cant even drive my baby! its like having a chocolate cake and not being able to eat it when you want to!! im soo sad!! i just dont know what to say :cussing:cussing:cussing

Lol, Lucky for us queenslanders, we can drive pretty much anything. We were actually informed in the Learner's book that those rules apparently also being in QLD are just a myth and don't exist. I still cruise in my dad's 3.8L V6 commodore, and its a great car to learn in. Pitty its no vee dub.
Some of those rules are pretty stupid.

I think you are right when you say that driver ed is very important. But I totally disagree with you about limiting engine power and speed for inexperienced drivers.
Would you let a 3 year old play with a cordless drill?
Of course not.
Because they are dangerous in the wrong hands. The same goes for these cars. Now while I agree that an Excel is a weapon just the same, it's not at weapon with the potential to produce in excess of 200rwkw with fairly basic mods. Alot of these cars are. How many P platers have you had overtake you at ludicrous speeds in late model skylines and WRXs?
I've had heaps. These are generally regoed and insured in their parent's name, and dear old daddy'o has no idea what young ------- (insert hoddlum's name here) is doing with his mates. If you want to see the truth come and spend a weekend in Auburn or Bankstown.
Most of the cars these young guys drive are imports coz nissan Aust deamed them to powerful for the Aussie market. They were right. What the hell are these young guys doing driving them round like the road is their private drift track.
Wake up and opne your eyes. This is a very good idea.
For Alex,
Sorry man. I know you're one fo the few who is capable of handling this power. Unfortunately, like most things, the nice guys have to miss out coz of the idiots.
A combination of both would be the best idea. Better drivers ed and more stringent licensing testing would be a good start. Restricting P platers from hi po cars is not the solution, but it may help. Simply banning them from all V8's and forced induction cars is the kind of simplistic idea that we've come to expect. After all, it is much cheaper and easier than making changes to the licensing system. Like mscabrio said, it might help if people started thinking of driving as a privilege, not a right.
That list is such a load of crap, I mean it includes 1984 Ford F150s for God's sake, not exactly high performance cars. It makes me laugh to see a 993cc Daihatsu listed next to a Corsa Special Vehicles 5.7L V8, just because it is turbo charged. Landcruisers? What about a list based on something meaningful like power to weight ratio rather than just no of cylinders? I'm sure there are old V8s on that list which are slower than alot of modern NA 4s or 6s.
It's unfortunate that responsible young drivers have to suffer because of their irresponsible bretheren. Unfortunately with an issue like this it only takes a few knobs to spoil it for the majority who can enjoy thier hi po cars responsibly.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
gotta love bein in qld and havin my license already :thumb

i had a similar argument with an instructor at work to this. im not for this and he was but as soon as i brought up the idea of similar training for 4wd drivers he wanted nothing to do with me and basically told me i was an idiot. i think that this is only a quick fix that will do nothing. the only thing that will fix the system is a complete overhaul of licensing procedures and retesting of drivers at fixed time spaces. alex i feel for you mate i reckon you of all people have coped the short end of the stick

Im not on my P's so it doesnt affect me directly at all.
97% of real world frontal crashes occur at 64km/h or less - even a fiat niki can get to this speed 🙂. 50% of accidents are due to errors in driver perception. Only a very small amount of accidents are actually caused by excessive speed (note that the RTA always says "contributing factor" not CAUSE). The prohibited list will be ineffective and difficult to enforce in the real world. What use is it disenfranchising tomorrows drivers to gain little or nothing??? P Platers will be less likely to follow any laws at the present at all if they think they are unfair. How many P Platers will actually put on their plates anyway? There is no point in putting forward laws that cannot be practically enforced.
In Victoria when they introduced power/weight ratios for bikes there was no significant reduction in deaths. If they introduce power/weight ratios for p platers here, how are they going to police modified cars? Do you think the cops will pull people over for a quick dyno and weigh in? 😀 I think not.
Also what will happen once a whole group of p platers finally are legally allowed to drive all these cars? Especially when you get a licence, you only have to stop at stop signs and reverse park 400mm from the kerb. They don't even teach you how to brake properly and most driving instructors only teach you how to pass the test not how to drive.
Jon
okay..so i can take my 2.0L vw golf to nsw and drive it.
bear in mind..it's got different plugs and leads, exhaust, and has been slightly tuned. it does over 200km/h (quite happily i might add)..but i could drive this..which is just as dangerous as and v8 or 6cylinder.
and what happens to P platers from other states that are travelling..are they restriced once they get in nsw?
let's face it..CARS ARE DANGEROUS. what makes them deadly, is the idiots that drive them.

look i might aswell face it, In the however many years i cant drive my car for it will probably save my licence a couple of times so may as well get the stocka oval in the backyard goin and slam it in the weeds and have a cruzer! life sucks at this point in time!

Che Castro wrote:They don't even teach you how to brake properly and most driving instructors only teach you how to pass the test not how to drive.
That's your problem right there. There's so many morons driving on P plates you wonder why they bother having tests at all?
What an interesting list. I agree with what's been implemented because I always believe that power and youth don't mix. It is similar to the bike regulations....have the power once you have the experience. Ok, it will disadvantage those that are capable and responsible, however they only have to blame those of the same age group who are irresponsible, not the legislators.
Anyway...that's my 20c....
More importantly, it's got to see that an RT Charger isn't on the list.
So you can drive a 32 Ford. Fom the factory with a V8.
Even a flathead makes a shit-load more power than a lot of the cars on the list.
Stupid rules to try an ensure a desperate govt gets re-elected.
Who buys back the cars of those who already own them?
I'm not in NSW but had a look out of interest. This is the stupidest thing. I learnt to drive in my old man's range rover when I was 6 at our farm. It is a V8, but hardly fast. I figure if a 6yo can handle it then any L or P plater can. It has a V8 for torque not speed.
Only brought that up because range rovers are on the list. But what I have seen on telly recently, probably bloody ACA or something is that they want to limit the number of passengers in L platers cars. When I started driving on the roads when I was 16 most of my time was clocked up on the freeway going to and from mt hotham every weekend during the ski season. If the number of passengers was limited I would have not been able to do this and would have far less night driving, country driving, snow driving, freeway driving experience.
These people should think about the laws they are creating and look at what they are banning and why. Instead of bringing in stupid laws to try and stop a very small minority of drivers from getting into turbo/supercharged rice rockets. + I know plenty of people who have cars like this that don't drive stupidly on the road...
banning ferrari f50's, csv's, tvr's etc? as well as the mighty charade turbo?
30% of p platers will be forced to drive 'illegal' (not necessarily dangerous) cars, simply because the family doesn't have anything else apart from the v8 commodore family car, or dad's turbo diesel courier work car.
che castro is exactly right. here you go son, stop at that sign, give way to them, reverse park here. can do that? here's your license. then we get loose on the highway with only mums training and wonder why they crash. i'll tell you why. because they're not being told how to control a car properly. the emphasis should go off reverse parking and onto how to control a slide on a corrugated dirt road, what to do in an oil on the road induced slide, what to do when you overshoot a corner and the car understeers. the longer you keep ignoring this type of stuff, the more kids will die on the road.
and to say that driver training leads to over confidence is complete bullshit. the overconfident ones still flog their cars, trying to drift them etc, be it mums corolla, a supra or a vc commodore.

Um, but what happens if a Queenslander P-Plater drives down to NSW for a holiday?
Does he/she obey QLD laws (Cause the driver is a queensland p-plater) or does he/she obey NSW laws and restrictions. Cause us queenslander drivers aren't taught the rules and regulations with NSW, so yeah.
Just wondering.

You drive to the rules and restrictions of your license for what ever state you are legislated to drive in.

Alex, why can't you drive your car? It's not turbo or a V8 is it?
