Jumped in to Type 3 this arvo and turned the key on and .................. electrical smoke fire.
😠

I took the clock out and to the speedo out to get a better look of what going on behind the dash. One of the clock wires is the victim. There is a wire for the clock
light and a RED wire that runs to the main headlight switch on dash. It is this RED wire that has burnt out all the way from the clock to the headlight switch. The red wire has earthed on the dash as it might have been rubbing in this position for a while? As the clock never worked I removed all the dead wiring towards the headlight switch. I checked around for any damage to any other wires and nothing I could really spot. Since I wasnt fussed about the clock wire I put all the dash etc back together and was going to be on my way when.......... Part 2 madness begain.

When I now turn the key onto accessaries the blinker relay makes a buzzing noise and there are no oil or charge light. Turn the key and she fires up and the buzzing noise disappears. If I use a turn signal, the fuel needle moves from empty to full, back and forward and the charge light come on. To make things more confusing, if I use the hazard lights, the indictors work and the charge and oil light flash. The blinker relay box still make the proper click noise when the engine is on. All fuses are in working order, all lights/indictors work, and radio.

Can any one help with a solution?

Thanks in advance,
Brad.

brad there is two ways to do this one the easy way out take it to an auto electrician and maybe get ripped off or maybe get it solved easy.or get a bentley manual for your type 3 then follow the diagram and check all the wiring until you got it sorted. This is the best way i recon.Check that you put the wire on the headlight switch on the correct terminal.

that happened to me once in the kombi, was replacing a light bulb
for the rpm tacko & dropped a screw driver behind dash (was dismantled)
anyway fused a wire which burnt out & the heat ran along the wire & fused halve a dozen other wires together, sent the dash haywire.
had to replace them all
ps short cuts never work always disconnect the battery which i didnt then

good luck wally

nearly forgot check all the other wires in the same area maybe fused

Thanks for your help Kustomkool and Winerot. I will have another look behind the dash as see if any thing is fused. I have been meaning to get the Bentley manual for some time but I have been relying on the crap edition of Scientific Publications T3 manual. Arrhh.........................the joys of wasting another weekend fixing a mystry problem with the car.
Thanks,
Brad.

Yea, when ever you work on wiring disconnect your battery, its only one little nut. Sounds to me like you put the wires back the wrong way. At least its all working, just gotta get the wires connect to where there sposed to be connected. It will be hard for some1 on this forum to tell you what wires are wrong without seeing the car. Best bet is get the manual and just check it all...
