Just wondering how everyone deals with the money side of things when it comes to resotring their vehicles.

Do you get a car loan, or save up all the cash? Or maybe just getting things bit by bit? But what happens when a big purchase comes around?

Is it crazy to get a loan?

But I guess I'm only young and stupid once right?

Bit by bit. I think getting a loan for a car resto is a bit of a waste of $$$. seeing as you will never ever make back the $ and time put into the car (there are rare exceptions i guess)

Is that true for new cars as well? It's a given that cars depreciate, but at least a classic car is going up? (Eventually) I guess it depends on the type of car and resto though.

People get loans for a new civic or something and cop a shiteload of depreciation in the first year. How is funding a resto with a car loan any different?

I agree about new cars too - all cars are money pits. new or old. it's very rare that you will ever make money from buying an old car and restoring it then selling it. Even if you had one of those mercedes gullwing 300SL's, you still have to find someone who is willing to pay the million or so they are supposed to be worth for the one you have just restored. It is just really dead money, but it's up to the individual depending on how much they really want a car.

Extra shifts and overtime for the bigger purchases or just hide away the leftover after each fortnight for the rest. I'm lucky the better half is understanding of my disease and is always encouraging me to "just buy it" I guess I should buy her some flowers or something now, no, I'll let her come to Byron Breeze and let her encourage me some more!😘D

I agree with Che about never making money on cars. I have done a few and lost on most... so why do it? Cause thats what im into. Some smoke drugs and get pissed, some play sport, some build cars. When building a car you start with a dream, then make it happen. I never let money get in the way. Sure you have to save etc but dont not do what you want to, just take longer and be patient and have what you want. An understanding partner and good job and friends in the trade also help,

My big plan was selling tee shirts.... didn't make enough to fund the resto, but geez it helps with interstate trips since they become tax deductible!!!

there is never a right time but you will always make it work if you really want it , i also agree that time and patience is the only way , the best thing about time and patience is that when the cash isnt there, there still is a thousand small jobs you can do that wont cost alot so you will find that you will get a better result in the end with more satisfaction

Borrow more money for the "home renovations" from the bank - at least the house is appreciating so my outlay for the resto can be justified (sort of) 😉

Just don't tell the bank :duh

Hey Peter that's the go, worked for me!!

The way to do it is make it self funding. If you are going to have a hobby like this (old VWs), just start collecting anything VW that's cheap or that someone else is throwing out and take stuff to swap meets etc and before you know it you've got your money back and still got heaps of bits left for the project of your dreams. It also helps to allow 30-40 years for this to happen and buy a few acres to put it all on.

The Desert Splitty was built this way, pretty much totaly out of the paddock (April '04, 76 VWs in the paddock), 12 weeks from derilect, rusty, doorless shell to Registration and the only thing I bought for it was the paint.

Cheers, Ian.
