I am having issues reacing the gear stick but have mad a compromise for the last few months, but as a new seat is going in i would like to sort it all out.
Now i have posistion for the seat which is right for the peddles, and wheel, but find i have to move my left shoulder foward to reach the gear stick. (this is in a L bug)
this weekend iam putting in my new seat and harness which will mean i can't lean foward slightly to get the gear stick.
Is it possible to bend the gear stick? the L bugs spinds, so can i drill and put pins in and then bend the lever?
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

I cut the shifter on my buggy and welded it back together with a lean on it. It was a located shifter (with a pin).
If you can track down a shifter from an earlier pan (with the anti spin pin) and then cut end weld it to whatever angle you want.
Or you could go the Scat shifter option. COR have some Scat shifters in stock for good prices at the moment.
Hi
Your stock shifter rotates so you cant bend it. Take your shift rod out, put a slot in it like early Beetles, then fit a Type 3 gear stick.
Steve
Yeah, so a type 3 lever will fit? i think the cup already has slots in it, so was wondering how easy it is to modify my current lever.

Hi
If you have a stock shifter they dont have the slot and the stick will rotate. The Type 3 shifter bolts straight in.
Steve
A mate of mine bent his superbug shifter only to find that it spins around and then to find out that it broke off in his hand leaving him with about 50mm if gearstick.

yeah i know it spins, so trying to find out if there is a way to stop it. mabye the cut and wled method would be better than the bend method. I just wish my arms weren't so short iam 6'3 with average leg length, but with an amrspan of only 6' so have the seat back, but upright to reach the wheel and gearstick.

I've had a look in the shed and all the shift rods I have (even the late ones) have the slot to take a locating pin from an early bug shifter or type 3 layback shifter. So there should be no mods required to the shift rod. All you need is a Type 3 or early beetle shifter.
I wouldn't bend it. I'd cut and weld. If you cut and weld you can shorten the shifter at the same time and mount a quick shift kit for a sporty feel. Worked for me 🙂
[edit]
Also note if you cut and weld the shifter and you want a quick shift kit you need to put the upper collar on before you weld the shifter back together or you won't get the collar past the bend.

Hi
The Super bug & L bug didnt haver the slot in the shift rod, so you will need to make one in your existing rod. The type 3 shifter has bend in it which will bring it back closer to you.
Steve
Did beetles ever come with a laid back shifter ?
My 66 has one just wondering if its stock or not. either way I love it.
.
Laid back were stock on Link Pin pans.
