Eventually I would like to save up and buy a 1600TP and recon it or just save the hassle and buy a new brazillian one...1600TP which are $2000. Has anyone had the brazillian ones b 4 and how do they run? I don't which of the 2 is a better idea?

I have heard bad things about these brazillan imported motors but maybe it was just the way they were set up and or serviced but i would go the reco aleast you have more of and idea what is going into your motor and as terry said you up the capacity for not to much more $
Just find a good engine builder there arn't that many out there
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't

I think - not sure - the Brazil engines have cheaper bits in them (cast crank for example) which means they are no good for upgrading/more power... but they may be fine for stock use.... but so is second-hand!

I have had 2 reco'd motors. Both cost me good dollars, a few weeks down the road, they were pissing out oil and running as bad as before.
So maybe I have been swayed towards new.
I have seen and tried out a new motor I actually think they are Mexican, not sure, but they are pretty sweet
Custom off road could probably get you a new engine as cheap as a reco'd motor
I have just imported a 1641cc Street power for my new splitty project, reco'd by Remtec in Europe to oriiginal VW standards.
Heard good reports about Conti engines too on Bribie

i'd go rebuilt. The brazilian stuff is nowhere near as good as the original german stuff (even if it is 30 years old). Particularly the cranks, the brazilian ones are cast, german are forged.

We had Phoenix engineering build us a new engine 12 years ago. It had a little bit of work done on the top end when we restored the car (155,000km later) and it is still going strong. It cost about 5k though. The new engines Mick Motors has are from Mexico and they are only about 2.3k/2.4k something like that for a long block. We will be putting one of them in to the 72 beetle when we are ready.
