Ok, I know this is probably one of the most infuriating subjects to do with beetles, but I need an answer.

The guage in a 6v car Im fixing works beautifully when the car is stationary, but as soon as there is some kind of movement, the needle jumps around erratically (in relation to sloshing fuel)

Is there supposed to be some kind of pulsater in the positive line of the guage, like newer model beetles to erradicate this?
Or does this indicate that the guage is stuffed?

Cheers

depends on the type of sender in the tank. if the fuel is actually moving around when it happens then there is probably not a lot you can do. You could pull out the sender and if it is the type that just looks like a tube there should only be about 2 or 3 small holes in the bottom of it (to allow fuel into and out of the chamber) if there are too many then fluctuations in the fuel level in the tank will transfer into the chamber of the sender and you get erratic readings.

Does it jump around all the time - with the tank full/empty/half full/etc?

The gauge in my '63 Bug (which is 6V) does jump around sometimes - when the tank is below half full, and I have driven over a rough patch of road or stopped suddenly (as suddenly as drum brakes will let you 😀 ), but when driving at a constant speed over a smooth section of road, it is usually steady...

Tnate, I have a fuel gauge you can try out on the sender if it helps.

Men
This erratic behaviour of guages has little to do with the sender unless the erraticness is at a certain fuel level only.

Its a fairly common thing with older guages of various brands where the movement of the guage is not "damped" sufficiently and reactls wildly to sloshing of the fuel in the tank.

Not much you can do about it really.
