I just went to put oil in my engine(bay kombi 2 litre)& when i pulled off the oil cap to put the oil in there was a yellowy kind of frothy scum all over the inside of the lid & around the top of the filler area that you pour the oil down.I wiped all that i could see off but I've never seen this before & was wondering if anyone could tell me what & why it had happened & if it can have any ill effects on my 'ol girl???
Oh....Snap.....!

It's moisture mixed with the oil. Let me guess... you do lots of short trips, right?
It's normal to see that when the engine doesn't get hot enough to boil off the water vapour that sometimes gets in.

Ahhh.thanx.I've just started a new job recently & i am driving it alot more for little 6-7 min trips to & from work each day Plus its bloody cold down here.So its nothing to worry about??
Oh....Snap.....!
I've noticed the same in Genevieve but most of my trips are 70-80km each way. Should I be looking for something else or is it the same prob?
might be moisture in the oil, dont know where water would come from in an oil cooled motor though?
probably gremlin goo
it is condensation from the crank case.
Caused by the engine not getting hot enough to get rid of it.
You doing a lot of short trips at the moment??
Futue te ipsum!!!
Yep Bizzare is right, just moisture.I would change the oil anyway just to make sure eveything is sound:thumbJVLRacing
got the same thing. i drive 5 minutes to work at night in the cold each way about 5 times a week usually so that explains it.

saponification........me too, every winter.....short runs in cooler climate, all you can do is run long enough to get real hot and change oil more often....i have wondered if running a bit rich might make it worse?
all the above change the oil and go for a good drive ,get that iol hot ,another thing when somebody said 'nothin to worry about ' they are quite wrong its no good at all for the motor to run cold with diluted oil ,just about the single worst thing you can do to the poor bugger,,try and get your thermostats fixed folks you need them
Yep make sure you have thermostat and flaps, many motors have had them removed by previous owners/mechanics who should have known better. You need them! They exist to get the motor up to full running temperature quickly, which is important as most wear happens while it's running cold.

Dude, a little bit of moisture in the oil due to short trips is NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. Don't make a mountain out of a flat tit...

well dude you can drive with a sump full of water but it sure as hell aint the recommended lubricant.do you know whats in that water that has collected in the sump ?trust me its not just water why do you think car manufactures go to so much trouble manufacturing and fitting thermostats if they arnt really necessary .
