Hi there,

I am writing an academic paper on the entropy of password reset systems. If you'd like to participate, just answer these five questions and the subsequent question as if you had to register for a service like a bank account or a news service.

As these questions may be used as real questions for actual security systems, please U2U them to me. As soon as I've transferred them (without your name) to an Excel spreadsheet, I will delete them from my inbox.

1. Favorite color?
2. Favorite geometric shape (ie triangle)?
3. Favorite type of pet?
4. Favorite food?
5. Location of first holiday?
Q1. Are the answers you gave to 1-5 true? (ie did you answer differently to reality?)
Q2. If you had to create a question, what would it be?

I am not asking any of the more personal questions which typically appear on such lists, as:

a) they can be found via through public records (bad!)
b) they are well on the way to allowing me to apply for a personal loan as you (bad!)
c) There's a very good chance relatives and close friends can correctly answer them (bad!)

Once I've finished the paper, I'll post it here for your delight.

So if I give you the answers to these questions you'll have a good chance of cracking some of my passwords. Your post is really just a cunning bit of social engineering, isn't it?

Just kidding ;-)

haha yeah. as a super administrator, vanderaj wouldn't need to 'crack' anything.

so if I put these questions into a dodgy webpage and send out a mass email telling everyone I know that something brilliant will happen at the end... will you help me crack their passwords? please?

That's one of the issues I am looking at. I've tried to remove as many culturally biased questions as possible, but it is practically impossible.

You could change holiday to vacation.... makes it a bit more amerocentric, but probably easier to interpret too...

Dear All,

culturally irrelevant in that european societies and settler societies (post colonial) have a cultural blind spot, thus are unaware of alternate nodes of thought (non empiricist and non rationalist); that is there are other ways of seeing and ways of knowing.

Derrida is perhaps the best of those euros who are aware of different nodes of thinking and doing:P.

now now... you cant go around asking if someone smokes drugs just because they practice lateral and creative thinking, or choose to learn by methods other than those used in formal teaching.

chances are they will indeed smoke drugs (or any number of other things) but then again, maybe they are naturally mentally expanded.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

sound like yer smoking papers not writing one.

How about ' do you want your password reset Y/N?'. of if thats too modern - 'wouldst thou' care to reseteth thy password yey orst nay? (for the older people).

There you go, research over, now go fix yer VW and quit smoking the papers.

.....well we know two people are onto were puuri is coming from

Not all cultures have pets but they may have animals...hmm maybe if they can be on a computer them maybe they know about a holiday but don't experience them the way we fellas do....free time or taking off (what I do) has a totally different purpose and meaning...I'm such a spur of the moment need to go walkabout type of person

Favourite colour is such a favourite question....you have to answer it every intro session you do at a new job and part of the getting to know you bit....I've decided black is mine 👍

Goodness fav geometric shape :jesus

It is such a thing now to make a questions culturally relevant for a given audience....a mine field for sure....n you need to allow for cultural irrelevance in a percentage of the audience when you look at results hey

Andrew your head much feel like bursting with all this stuff you're writing

i really do think "do you smoke drugs" is a relevant question..i know if i took a questionairre while i was on drugs...all my answers would come out wrong and i would challenge ANYONE to find something true out from me 🙂

just my train of thought.
