I've loved sailing for as long as i can remember... My family worked the trawlers for generations, i feel like i cant escape my need to be on the water!

I'm looking at crewing some sailboats in the pacific in 2005. Have even listed myself on some websites offering myself up as crew...

Just wondering if anyone here is into it and where you been?

I'm looking to eventually quit my job and sail for half a year or so and then work up PNG way..

Raced a Nacra catamaran for a few years...and also raced 18 foot skiffs for a few years...have plans to get back into 18 footers when the chance arises.

No better feeling that thundering down the Brissy river in 20 knots under a kite with 3 on the wire...whoo hoo

know idea what that feels like on the brissie river the one time i came up to sail the nationals there we were becalmed and the sydney- hobart had its worst storm ever. go figure. but there is no better feeling than screaming along with only a couple of foot of the boat in the water

Until it nose dives and you crack some ribs....

or the mast breakes (3 in one season)

or you win a race and capsize as your rounding to head back to the club and then the current washes you under a charter boat wanting to leave, with a whole bunch of pissed yobo's giving you advise and then when the pull you out from under the boat after dark the mast is stuck in the mud and snaps the mast.

or you capsize into a school of jellyfish and one gets stuck in your wet suit and stings the crap out of you...but we still finished the race.

or the skipper fails to hook up on his trap, and leaves you sailing upwind with no one steering the boat

Ahhhh....I miss it all

been there done all that. how about in the top ten and rounding the second last buoy you hear bang and you no longer have a rudder box as it blew out and bent the 10mm stainless pin holding it a good 75mm

How about jibing in 20 knots and tearing the whole traveller out of the boat

Sorry for hijacking the thread

Hey what club did you used to sail at on the river kafer? i used to sail form the 18 footers. started in sabot's at age 5 and ended up in lazers, 125's and sailed a fireball for a while. then i got into motorsport............ used to also crew on some of the old trailersailers on the bay.

Learnt to sail when I was 6, raced dinghies a lot until I was 18 then spent a summer working as a sailing instructor. Then had a forced break for a few years (dad sold the boats - I'll never forgive him) until I raced small yachts for a while. Unfortunately not sailing at the moment, the opportunities in a land-locked city are limited 🙁 I miss it

grew up on 18 & 16ft hobies.had a laser for a while, shat myself one arvo on lake macquarie when caught out by one of those good old days summer afternoon storms, 3ft chops breaking over the front for hours.then there were the nacras, stingrays, and an A class. when the wind is under ten nots, we've been known to stuff around in the nambucca river mouth in the$100 16ft hobie we tie up on the river bank during summer, thats sweet , grab the sails from the shed, hoist em up and we are out there, the mast stays up all summer, a couple of knots in a rpoe to a tree, too easy, life in the country.my uncle and father are the two ends of the scale, the old man pretty's em up and washes them after etc, the uncle is the one who just ties the el cheapo up after a good thrashing. uncle said to me once that stuffing around cleaning and fussing after an arvo on the water just ruins what you went out for in the first place, when he said that it was one of those moments you carry for the rest of your life, i have taken those couple of sentences he said to me into many parts of my life now. any ways, now its a cruise on the hartley ts 18 trailer sailer when i.m driving around and spot uncle mark on the water, but when its 15knts and up , luke and i are windsurfing, hard!!! luv it, there is something about all that natural power and speed, without the noise. love freaking out newbies on the hobie, speed and sensation, but only the sound of wind and water, wicked!! two cousins are taking kite bording to the edge, but those things freak me out, seems uncontrolable power, its not just a matter of letting the boom go when overpowered with the kites, you have to burry in and sail the things thru the power to get out of trouble, thats o.k if your'e not in the car park before its all under control!!

hey good to see some of you's are attached to the water also....

yeah just something about the vastness of space that makes me feel free when i am sailing that i love... that and being one with the breeze that does what it wants...

have never owned my own boat but am tossing up downsizing my motorbike to and older cruiser and using the left over cash to buy a 16ft cat so i can sail when and where i want....

theirs heaps of boats operating out of asia looking for crew... they travel all over the place and all you have to pay for is your own food when you dock wherever... just do a bit of deckwork and then relax and cruise... what a great way to travel..

have previously just sailed small catamarans, lasers and few other trailers sailers... nearly died in one that tipped over when i got caught up in loose ropes when i was underwater.. managed to break free as i run out of breath only to come up under the sail so had to dive back down again against my PFD and come up the other side.... whoa scary....

i use to see how far i could swim underwater on the one breath before i blacked out when i was younger...well i was actually too competitive for my own good so would push the boundries til i blacked out.. would swim the breadth of the local 50M pool underwater and just start blacking out as i hit the other side.... i dare say that saved me as i was drowning under the boat!

hav'nt had that many other mishaps... lost the centreboard one day in 30 knot winds and nearly hit a beacon we were rounding as we started sliding sideways into it... same beacon a day later the tiller snapped off in my hand.. bloody rotten wood and a wicked cross currenet... boat spun about on its side as the boom whacked from one side to the other...nearly hit the same beacon hahaha..

ahh i love sailing

I don't normally like to brag but this time I'm going to... I used to swim the length of a 50m pool! Then I changed schools and they had a 25m pool, so I would swim 2 lengths of it underwater, staying under for the turn. 2 lengths of 25m is actually easier than 1 length of 50m because you get a good push-off at the halfway point. When I got to the end I'd pop up so I was standing on the side in one movement, turn around and look down the length of the pool where I'd just swam and see it was all smooth and still.

i was invited to be part of the crew of the James Craig, if you are into old classic ships look them up and give them a call, i work most weekends, which is when they go out in the harbour and beyond. But a more beutiful ship to crew in Syd i think may be hard to find, i mean its a peice of our history, fully restored and working, like a VW!

i've only ever been on a couple of 1/2 hour hire cats but loved it. My uncles have all been sailors and owned their own. When I discovered how much fun it was I asked if I could have one but they had already given the last one to my cousin. Not fair, he got the 74 beetle my aunt bought new AND he got the boat.

I'd love to be able to sail around sydney harbour or the hawksbury. should get a houseboat on the river sometime.
first I have to find an eyepatch so I can play pirate though. Ah Haarrr me hearties.
