This morning I decided to go for a short drive to where one of my cars is stored (at a relatives place nearby) to check out a few things and take a couple more pics for my website. As I currently have my ’63 Bug parked at home I thought that I would use it for a change rather than my boring company car.
I fired it up and congratulated myself on how well the choke works on cold mornings 😀, before reversing out the driveway and rumbling off down the street (the guts have just ‘removed themselves’ from one of the standard tailpipes, so it really does rumble!:bounce)
As I turned onto the main road through Helensvale a bloke in a Hi-visibility shirt stepped out in front of me and instructed me to pull my car over into the parking lane. My initial reaction was ‘Oh crap!’ as my ’63 is on concessional rego, but I then realised that I was within the 15km from home limit that I can ‘test’ the car within, so no major problem….
I was informed that my car was going to be emissions tested and that all I had to do was allow my car to idle. They then placed a probe in one of the tailpipes and wandered around the car checking tyres, windscreen and light lenses (not the actual operation of the lights). One of the Transport Dept guys then checked the rego sticker….he re-read it a couple of times before saying something to one of his workmates and shrugging his shoulders as he walked back to the probe in my exhaust. The guy he spoke to then came and asked me what year the car was (even though it’s written on the rego sticker!🙄) – when I told him it was a ’63 he smiled and said “… there are no emissions limits for a car of this age…”, handed me an info flyer with the emissions readings on it, and added “it’s running a bit rich – cool car, have a nice day”! 😁
I’m not really concerned about the readings as the engine was still cold and the choke was on, so that would explain the rich reading.
Just thought that some of you would be interested that this was only a courtesy checkup and they were not issuing tickets for emission problems, however if there were other roadworthy issues it may have been a different story….
Here is the flyer they gave me…a bit rich!?! Almost double the minimum ‘poor’ reading! 😵💫

grrr - crappy image, but for a pre 1986 car a reading of over 4.5 for CO% Volume is considered poor - mine read 7.69!

heh go easy on the JPEG compression. cant read a thing on that
Jon
oh well it has been going to happen for a while now. but the best thing is that it only has to comply with the standards of that era. wahoo mines before emissions gear became standard

The HC ppm wasnt too bad though..... just the CO.
Good to see that they are out and testing though.

If they apply it properly I have no probs with it all, I know that there are crap loads of 'modern' cars out there that spew out more than my 71 square (and it isn't even tuned properley!!) and so many people forget that part of their car's maintenance!!

I'm supprised the coppers are dumb enough that they actually still tested a car that was clearly pre-emissions! Typical.
A year or so ago they had the shaker out on the side of the road in Cairns to test cars etc. It will be a cold day in hell when they make me drive my car onto one of those things. I'd rather go over the pits at department of transport again....
Ratty, what fuel do you run? Any additives?
Just curoius
Nah
not scared Rob 🙂
the bike, and VW's will be pre emission testing, and the one car that can be tested is well maintained... all of it is well maintained!

I just run Premium Unleaded - no particular brand and no additives.
I would have thought that a test like this would only be accurate when the engine is at full operating temprature and with the choke fully OFF! I hadn't even had the car running for a minuite when they tested me and the choke was definatly ON. :duh
