how quickly could he theoretically have done the trip? Forget speed laws, the thing does about 390 so Melbourne to Sydney in ...what, few hours??

I used to work for storagetek in woking (uk) next to mclaren and followed it into work in my bug. It was being driven on garage plates. This was when it was new out. I had this had moment to just drive straight into the back of it.
I reconed I would have got in the sun newspaper and I would have loved to see what the insurance company would have said. especially if my rusty 71 had come off better.
Needless to say I bottled it and just tell the story.
