is there an easy way to stop the motor from turning whilst trying to undo the nut holding the pulley??
am taking all the tinware off and the piece behind and under the pulley is the last one.
thanks.

Is this the crank pulley?

Either way, my idea would be similar to removing the generator pulley off - wedge a screw driver betweent eh cut out on the gennie pulley wheel and a screw on the gennie. The fan belt should hold the crank pulley if that's what you're after.. if it slips, tighten the fan belt?

get two bolts that hold the clutch in, and screw them in halfway, put a bar or an angle so it will touch the ground and lock the flywheel when you try rotate it.

Too late now but you can get a flywheel lock for cheap from some vw parts suppliers. I made my own - cut one side of a section of SHS (square hollow steel) of decent thickness, then welded a bolt to the middle side - then a nut holds it place through the case mounting hole.

Hard to explain, but here is a picture of the proper one - you'll get the idea.
