🙂

I have a '76 Kombi, all sweet, just recoed the engine all ready to be registered but...

Its plated as a 2 seater and i have been informed that i need new seat belts and an engi. cert, blue plate etc. to get it regoed as an 8 seater meaning $$$$ i dont have to spare at the moment.

The question is: If i register it as a 2 seater and then in say 6 months time put the back seats in and get the new belts etc., what sorta trouble is it to get it registered at an 8 seater?

I am assuming i will need another rwc? or is it just an engi cert. -> Qld transport..Fee???? of some sort???

Cheers
James 😀

yeah nice bus..
you'll need $$ to put blue plates on it after it has had the 'proper legit engineer approved' certification crap been done to it.. a real pain but it can be done..
good luck

it is easier if you can bolt in original kombi seats with the seatbelt mounting thingos at the rear with good qual kombi seatbelts, as it would be fairly stock/orig and shouldnt have too many probs tryin to get it passed..
cheers

in qld i have been told you need new seat belts, i have a set of standard kombi ones but cant use them. I worked out it would cost me about $700+ to get new seats belts throughout(including front) with a blue plate.

I have a nice set of seats too... I am thinking i will just pull them out and register her as a 2 seater so i atleast have a car.

As long as you anchor the seat belts in the correct holes and the eat blets operate correctly you should be ok.

Mine is a 224 so plated for 8 saeting capacity but when I brought it to Qld it only had the rear seat and 2 seat belts so the middle one cost $25.00 and $165.00 for the blue pleate inspection. It is now plated as a 5 seater and if I want to go back to 8 I have to get anouther inspection and plate even though the original compliance plate states 8.
It really sux when you got a nice sound ride and see other crap on the road that shouldn't be registered or on the road at all.

When i got my kombi certified for 8 ppl (was 2) i was told that you only need to use new seat belts if a securing plate (basically a metal plate that reinforces the area around a drill hole) is needed . I used old seat belts (in good cond.) as the kombi has all the proper mouting holes, hence no need for any new drill holes so no securing plates.

Go into a seatbelt fitting place and ask, but i think you will find if
the kombi has all the proper seat belt mounting points, you will be fine with 2nd belts so all you need is a blue plate which was something like $120

have you talked to the boyz at Custom Offroad Components, they may be able to help at a price with your old stuff and it may be cheaper than buying new stuff and chasing it up your self...?

If not they may give you some info.

i got the info above from brad :P Just wondering if it would be too much trouble to change it seating capacity later or if it be much smarter to do it to start with.

I might try and get a road worthy tommorow and get it registered as a 2 seater.

as quoted from an email from brad

You need new belts as when you change the seating capacity of a vehicle they must be new. This is done as you can’t know the condition of 2nd hand ones as they may have come out of a car which has been in an accident etc etc. The only way we can know their condition is for them to be new.

The rules are very clear on this. At the time of inspection you need new belts with current ADR tags on them.

Well your other option go to a slightly dodgey seatbelt fitter... :o

I mean how many ppl run original seatbelts in the VW's anyway?!? Who knows where they came from and what their condition really is?!?,
it may not be completely legal for the garage but, i did get my seating capacity changed from 2 to 8 using 2nd seatbelts from a place in Wynnum..... I guess it depends if you want to take a chance with 2nd hand belts and go to a dodgy fitting place or pay the money and get new belts?!?

This is of course unless they laws have changed in a year 😵‍💫
