Hi
I want to buy a home sheetmetal bender, how thick is 18 gauge steel?
Steve
Not quite 2mm, I think
Keeping it real !
1.2mm
I think
.
1.2 mm is near enough. 1.22 mm or 0.048" to be exact. Paste the address in below for a great comparison chart

Steve
depends how you buy it.
18 gauge is generally the heaviest gauge we use in air cond duct work and is 1.2mm thick when youbuy it in a roll.
By the sheet in can be thinner. About 1.15 or something. The thinner stuff is imported steel
It is thick steel.
Futue te ipsum!!!
i`m with bizarre, they short change on the thickness these days as most say 2mm thickness comes in as 1.9mm 🙁

Hi
Thanks for the help. The site that 1500s posted, just goes to show how confusing this can be.

SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) is the same as sheetmetal except that the sheets are galvanised.
They then talk about base metal gauge.
That is suppose to be 1.25mm thick
But it aint 🤪
Pedantic yes.........but when you get some young tosser consultant, who has never turned a window shaker on let alone commissioned a hospital ac system, walking round with a micrometer he bought from Supa Cheap........:vader

Steel is around $1500 per tonne
You get around 38 sheets to the tonne in 18 gauge - so around $40 per sheet.
Seeing as it is a one off - a bit more.
U have a u2u as well Steve

Spoke to one of my AC friends and that thing doesnt bend and cut per se.
It just sort of roles ends - like an end cap to a pipe
On top of that they are flat out bending 20 gauge (1mm) with full on equipment
You can see in the second pic where it is held in a vice and it is rolling a piece. To cut it sort of "pinches" it off between the rollers.
As an experiment it is may be worth a try but he reckons the $$$ could be better spent else where.
Anyone here in the forum bought one of these???
PS all his offcuts are gal. sorry

If you are looking to make bends, like square right angles,, you will need sheet metal brake, that thing looks like a roller for curves??. May be wrong.
If you are handy enough I have plans for a brake which will bend up to 1/8" which will be much cheaper to make than $250
.
.
Yeah chewy that one looks a bit poxy. The ones I use at St George TAFE look like they are from the 1900's and weight about a tonne each. These brakes are 1mm steel max as well. Although i reckon you could put in 1.5mm 🙂
Steve that other thing you posted looks like a swaging machine, they say it has cutting heads so it will cut like rotary shears i think? Looks good to me.
Jon
My god!!!!!! Are they siill teaching trades at St George???? Thought they had got rid of those "hobby" courses. Get in quick before the become extinct as well! The equipment may be old but I bet it still works. Are they proper brake presses or folders? Anyone need their case or heads bored for big cyls? Just talk nicely and we may be able to help in the Hawkesbury area for a couple of high octane sherberts!

Hi
The tool I linked to looks like it will do a few things.
Chewy If you have the plans for a folder that would be cool as well.
Steve
here are all the wire and sheet metal gauges you will ever need
