I've got a 40HP 1200 in my oval and the right rocker cover retainer (the rear bend) is fouling on the body. The left rocker cover retainer has about 10-15mm clearance. I've moved the gearbox around before as I replaced the front GB mount. Did I not reinstall da GB in correctly? Is there a way to pivot the engine&GB clockwise (when viewing from directly above) so that the rocker cover retainer won't hit the body work?

Chris the only motor that fits perfect in an Oval is a 36HP. All others will foul at the point you talk about. It will be worse if the rear end has sagged a bit for some reason, been hit or what ever. But the bailey for the rocker cover on 40HP on will touch. You will need to either flatten the area on the body slightly so it clears. (its the folded edge where it hits right?) or go to aftermarket rocker covers that attach with bolts.
Yeah DEan is right the 40hp is slightly wider and juts out in a different place compared to a 36hp
You could cut or alter the body work slightly to get the clearance
As Dean siad also have you replaced and reset the rear suspension torsion arms and rubbers, if there 50 years old then there bound to be worn and distorted.
the 40HP commonly fouls? How the :puke do ppl fit in 1600+ engines in there?!
I've already altered that part of the body that you suggested - I thought I had some clearence, but with use, the engine has settled down and moved a cross a bit. I was also thinking about bold on rocker covers - do I have to alter my head for that? Or are there already bolt hole for aftermarket bolt on covers?
vw54: My suspension is pretty tight. When I had the stock rims and rubber on it, I still had the factory smidgen of positive camber. I can also feel the rear is tight from the ride - it must have been redone once in it's 50 year life...
So, how much for bolt on covers?

I dont think u will find 40hp bolt of rocker covers unless u go to Ebay RARE as they say
You could elongate the rear gearbox support slightly to gain a little more clearence
You can also trim some of the engine tinware so u get more clearance
a little here a little there
this is very intersting, just went down & crawled under mine, I have a whole 3/16" clearance ! dunno how it was acheived though because I can not see anything altered or bent, doesn't look like it has been hitting
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54

Its not fun! especially when they have dual kads!
:jesus
.
Chris what Dave is talking about is the rubber washers between the body and the suspension towers. Where the large body attachement bolts go. You might be able to remove these bolts and jack the body up a bit to add more rubber packers. Will raise the body relative to the engine that is attached to the frame.
On my oval I had to totally flatten the curved part of the quarter panel , just below the bumper brackets so the Bailey wire on my 1600 would clear the body work. It was still really close, like only abour 5 mil clearance. If it touches you will get lotsa noise in the car.
Dave arent the 40hp 1200 rocker covers the same size as 1300,1500 and 1600?
Bolt on rocker covers for 40Hp engine rare?????

That's what i thought too..
Well I'll see how much more i can flatten out the body work.. otherwise, i'll opt for the bolt-ons...nn[ Edited on 22-9-05 by oval TOFU ]

The 36HP ones are as rare as Rockin Horse Do Do. And worth a motza when you do find em.
this thread suprised me & when I had a look on peach, found I had only 2 or at most 3mm clearance between body & clip, so went to Classic Vee Dub & bought some aluminium bolt on covers & I now have 1cm clearance & they look good if you are lying on the ground when car passes by

I just bent my already semi-bent body work out of the way - it's a bit of a butchering, but I saved myself buying bolt on rocker covers which would bave been my next step to increasing clearence... Good buy though Kim!

funny thing is that it does not look to me as if anything had been bent to make the clip not hit & it did just clear,
but clearance was so minimal, that it was possible that a major jolt had a chance of flex of body/pan throwing clip off & implications of that happening are not too good, so I did not want to risk, rocker clearance noise seems a bit queiter with the alloy covers, but that is not necessarily a good thing

Like the guys said, only a 36HP engine will fit the engine bay easily... anything else will be a squeeze..
Just check your tappet's clearences - it's an easy thing to do.. 🙂
