Hello hello.

can finaly afford to fix up the old girl. Ideas for making a custom bed in a kombi? Thought I would just take the rear seat out all together, and have a platform that comes out from the engine bay to the back of the middle seat. It might be a tiny bit short, but I guess I could sleep diagonal or in the featal position. I'd make it so it can fold backwards, and have a storage area under there behind the seat for the tire, subwoofers, camping and fishing geat etc. anyone done a similar tihng? oh have pics of such?. I might be able to shift the middle seat forward a little bit to get some more room, or make the bed higher than the top of the rear seat, and be able to pull it out further when needing sleep room.

A few more things. My cd deck is currently fastened into the glove box. It dosen't fit through the holei in the dash obviously. anyone ever tried to fix a cd unit themselves? where did you fix the brackets and how much of a pain in the ass was te job? Or if you payd for a pro to do it, what did they charge?

as for the speakers, I've got two 6 inchs in the middle, I've got some splits to go in the front, and I've got some 6x9s that are currently stickytaped under the middle seat. I want to mount them up the back from the wall or roof. Anyone done this? where did you attatch them? I'm pretty sure ive seen a photo from someones bus on here where they have mounted 6x9s from the back roof. Not sure what I can bolt brackets to up there...

As for the splits in the front, not sure where I can put them either. I remember seeing photos of a bus that had an extra shelf under the dashboard. I think it was a purple baga bus from qld? proabaly someone on this forum. If I did that I could mount the splits in boxes underneath the shelf. Plus that shelf would come in handy. Anyone got any photos of how that can be done? or any other photos of how speakers have been mounted in the front of bay kombis?

think thats all for now 😉

comments, advice, pics, encouragment? cheers fellow dubbers.

Take all your seats out and make a rock and roll bench seat which "roll's" into a bed in the pack. Heaps of storage under it, might have problems gettin it certified to seat 3 ppl tho...

Didnt quite understand ur question about the head deck but i grinded the hole out to fit my stereo in, looks nice and neat... :-)

thanks guys.

76 Camper, how did you mount the brackets for the head unit behind the dash? was it verry difficult. As for the beds I dont like the rock n roll beds. Just don't like the look of them really. I think I will just put up with the bed being an inch or two short.

KOM123 thanks for that. Ive made new door cards myself. I guess they could go in there. Have you had much trouble keeping the wires from breaking where they cross from the door to the main body of the car?

So there is a metal beam up the back there underneath the headliner for the 6x9s to be mounted to? Couldnt find it in my 72. I'll have another look 😉.

I made a bed platform in my old bay that fit behind the middle seats all the way to the rear door. sat about 10 inches above top engine bay access. Good storage, shelf up front and pull out draws out back. It was good but i wouldnt do it that way again- sleeping too high! The middle seat would need to be modified to move forward, but i would do this in an instant now cus the extra room is well worth it, not only for sleeping but for getting access to your storage. i would go to a steel fabricator and get some extensions to the rear legs welded on (after its registered of course!).
my platform was fixed at the front and it would be no trouble to cut a top access panel. Have a play, but sleeping straight is worth is well worth it!

no pics sorry, junn[ Edited on 23-9-2005 by YIOughta ]

I did mine myself. I cut the existing hole in the dash bigger to make it big enough to fit the CD player (using a hacksaw blade and file). The fittings that come with the CD player fix the front of it to the hole. The problem then is how to fix the back of the player (the end nearest the nose of the bus) so that it doesn't wobble up and down: the back of the player has a screw hole designed to allow you to attach a bracket, so I made up a bracket from a strip of metal and attached the other end of the bracket behind where the ash tray is. The result is a good solid attachment for the player, which doesn't wobble at all.

My bus has a poptop and a roof-cupboard, so I was able to mount my rear speakers in the roof-cupboard, like this:
