I am deciding which way to go I have a late 57
with the original 36hp and have the opertunety to get a
complete 1500 for the running gear for a cheap price!
what are the gear boxes like out of these models and
what mild mods can be done for more power?
also is changing the bal joint front end and brakes a good
conversion.

i take it the 1500 pan you can get is swing axle?
would be a lot better if you got the semi auto pan with the ball joint/IRS rear.
gearboxes are have no problems depending on wear.
if you are planning on using the 36hp engine then the best mod for more power is extractors, if they make them, not really an engine to make more horespower.
the 1500 pan will have ball joint, disc brake front end and is not interchangeable with the king link pin front end.
