Can anyone let me know how I can tell the different engines apart, Just by looking at them.

The 2 junked bugs that I have are supposed to be a 1300 & a 1600. However, to look at them the only notable differences are,

The 1970 bug ( "1600"--? ) has a slightly larger air intake that faces right, and a larger generator( 12v...).

The 1965 bug ( "1300 "--?) has a smaller air intake that faces left, and the generator is smaller ( 6 v... ).

Cheers jon...

It's a bit difficult to tell the actual displacement of the engine from the outside, as the internals between 1300-1500-1600 are all interchangeable. However you can look at the number on the case to tell what the case originally was (it is located at the base of the generator stand). You can look at the intake manifold, if it siameses as it comes to the head, this means it has twin port heads. Otherwise it is single port. A lot of old aircooled VW engines often are a mix and match of different bits from different engines as most of them have been rebuilt a few times by now.
