I currently have a 2L type 2 motor fitted to my 1972 super bug. We have had enless dramas with the stater set up. I think we have been using a standard 1600 TP,12V starter.
My question is does the 2L Type 2 need a bigger stronger starter, or is there a different gearing.
Thanks in Advance

Hi Brett

I have a 2L motor in my Type 3 Fastie for 10 months using the 1600 starter with no trouble

Have you had a relay put inline for the starter I had ths done when it had a 1600 motor and it is a big help.

Thanks for the reply Marc. The ways things are set up at the moment, we have the battery directly connected to the starter via a heavy battery cable. All the active supply for the car is picked up at the starter terminal. The only other wire of concern I think only activates a solinode in the starter. So I dont see how the relay could help.
Good to hear the set uop works for you, which means its possible. Our starter motor just does not seem to spin the motor fast enough. We got stuck along way from home on the weekend, and it would not start. Just not turning fast enough. We were lucky enough to have one of those road side jump start/compressor/light kits with us. We hooked it up and got 24V to the starter. That worked very well for a short term solution.

Sounds like you might have a "lazy" starter.

It might be worth stripping the starter and see if its running out of brushes, shorting between the commutator segments or got buggered bushes and the amature is poleing (rubbing on the inside of the stator.

None of these issues will show up as unusual noise but will definitely result in the starter being tired (lazy)

Im presuming you have got no negative side resistance? you say you have a HD +ive lead but is the -ive lead/strap dodgey?

What is the cranking voltage of the battery? It may be a dodgey battery and not supplying enough CCA but run the car just fine otherwise.

Is the charging system above 13 volts after a bit of running time?

A smalll and cheap multi-meter from the likes of Dick Smith/jaycar et al is your friend.

before you go pulling starters, make sure the starter is actually getting the juice.

And along with the above, check the bush in the bell housing

Thanks all. We have done most of the above. Long story short we have had a 12v auto starter in on motor for a while, it was lazy. We had a spare standard 12v starter so we put that in and went away for the weekend. After the first few starts this starter became very lazy and struggled to do the job. Dad is a electrician so we checked all the power side it was OK. Pulled the starter out and found the brushes to be good, the rear bush was fine but it seemed to be polling out at the front. Assumed the bush in the bell housing was stuffed and fixed as best we could. It still did not fix the problem, so we went 24V and got by.
I am of the assumption the standard 12v starter is dead or needs a serious rebuild. The auto starter does the job, but just.
I assume the best option would be recondion or get another starter.
So the question was will a standard 1600 starter start the 2L motor?. Is the 2L starter different in any way?
Thanks again Brett

Hi Brett.

I don't have an answer for you but one possibility I think that you might like to consider is perhaps reading the following article to help you understand why a relay may be a winner for your case (just maybe, I may be so wrong or misunderstanding something):

Relay Installation Instructions http://type2.com/bartnik/relay.htm

it is at http://type2.com/ and it's under "Technical Articles Library" in Electrical - Primary Starter section.

Thanks again Shigeru, I have read the article, and believe it does not apply. We have esentially already rewired the complete engine and do not have voltage drop to the soliniod. While we are not using a Relay our wiring esentially makes the switch act in the same way as the relay.

Thanks

Both the 2 lt and the 1600 starters are .7 hp , the 1600 will do the job but the bush in the gearbox is very critical for proper operation. Also get your battery load tested .

I had an issue about four years ago with the starter on my 2000 cc in the 1982 Kombi camper. NRMA says it was the starter motor but I wound up fitting the relay and havn't looked back. Would appear that there was enough volyage drop in the thin wire to the solenoid to not activate it. With the relay supplying 12V directly from the 12V large cable at the starter motor I have had no further issues over the past four years. In that four years I have put about 200,000 km on it in all sorts of conditions. So I swear by the relay trick.

I am going to have to revist this relay thing again. I am trying to picture the wiring diagram in my head. The relay is to provide a reliable 12v to the soleniod. I thought (I have been wrong before) the solide only provided thrust that enguages the gears. If that is the case, why is it that my motor turns over but not fast enough to start.
I will get under it again this weekend and load test the battery and check this voltage drop issue. I will find a way to test it.
Thanks again. Brett
