hello everyone, my trouble bug's newest current problem is that when I attempt to start the car, I get a horrible grinding noise before it starts. sometimes it grinds quickly and won't even start!

I'm guessing that the 6V flywheel and starter motor weren't designed to have 12V put through them, and they're starting to wear out now. Have any of you been in the same boat?

Erwin at Phoenix recommends me to put another 6V flywheel on, because going to 12V flywheel and starter motor would be a huge job. does anybody have a good 6V flywheel lying around?

it won't be long til the car quits starting altogether. please help!

thanks
Alex

I have 6V starter and flywheel in an upgraded 12v car for the last 15 years, no problems. Starts a lot quicker because the starter spins faster

i have a 6v starter and flywheel on a 12volt system... when i had the engine out last month there were signs of wear and tear on the teeth of the flywheel. eventually the starter will burn out, and you may rip teeth off the flywheel or starter.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

15 years? sounds good. I don't have the $$$ to go full 12V system unfortunately. and even if I did, the old piece of turd bug is not really worth it!

I wonder if there's a way to put a 6V regulator in or something to reduce the voltage for the starter.

has anybody got a good spare flywheel that I can buy? (to suit 40HP)
