The only way it would hinder cooling would be if the thermostat failed and left the flaps closed. The old style thermostats couldn't do this but they are very hard to find. I'm sure I read a spiel on the ShopTalkForum about temps with and without flaps but be stuffed if I can find it again! IIRC there wasn't a huge difference.

when vw thermostats fail they fail to close. if the flaps are not opening its something else. there is a way to modify a type 1 thermostat to fit. if i find the page i'll post the link.

The thermosat works as in the expanding canister does its bit however the wire is broken. I might be able to use a bike gear cable and connect the thermostat.

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
