I have a 1973 VW Superbug and it still has the big crappy looking airfilter on it and i was wondering if there was a better sort of airfilter that would fit right and look a lot better and not cost too much?
dunno if they are THAT much better.
Yours is complete in all its hoses and on cool mornings will suck warm air from below as opposed to sucking cold air from up top.
Yeh its just really annoying me because it looks bad and with all the pipes and stuff its realy cluttered and i just thought i might be able to get a better air filter with a better look

Think they fit PICT 28 not 34's.
You can get chrome / mesh ones to fit
BUT

Nope, the oilbath filters will fit a 32 or 32/34 pict just fine. You can also buy cheap chrome paper element ones for about $25 but they are only useful for streetwork and need to be serviced. The best ones are Unifilter oiled foam pod filters.
Sorry to be a pain, but do a search in the tech forums. We had this discussion a month or two ago.
Just because it has hoses and stuff and looks awful, doesn't mean it needs changing to something nicer.
I bought a buggy where the engine was totally stock except the previous owner had tossed the stock airfilter and added one of these nice chrome mesh gucci things.
I am cursing him all the way through winter, as the filter won't do what it needs to. I would have a better chance of driving a besser block through the eye of a needle than to be able to drive this buggy in winter. Nuthin'to do with the engine - it was running sweet. it was all the filter.
I had to solve it by (guess what) running extra hoses and things, but its doubly ugly as I couldn't run standard ones. I even have PVC pipes, fencing wire, and 2 coke cans to make the thing work.
My opinion only, as a truly amateur (and learning) dubber....if it ain't broke, don't fix it. VW made it work that way for a reason, even if it is ugly.
Brynus. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's the way it ought to be.
phantom. I suggest that you do what I did on my buggy when I lived in Canberra. In winter I led a piece of corrugated hot air pipe from a Beetle engine up from the cooling air stream at the rear of the engine and into the air intake of the air cleaner. It had a Donalson. It transformed the car and it ran like it did on a warm day. I remembered to not do river crossings when that set up was on.
im sure the vw people made it like that for a reason,
its how dirty and nasty looking the filter in side it thats inportant.to the car??????????
people change things all the time that dont help the car go any better
its easy to sell nice chrome things to people.
but tell them it will cost so much to do a job that keeps the car going and they jump up and down
:jesus
😂🤪😂🤪😂
car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲
Thanks shaihulud, yes I now have flexible pipe taking warm air from the bottom of the engine area directly into the filter. I have enclosed the filter with said coke cans and painted the hose, PVC connections, fencing wire, and assorted parts all black, to make it more uniform.
I've learnt with these beasts, the uglier it looks, the better performance you will probably get....
