Other pics!

[ Edited on 15-4-2006 by Volkswagenboy1 ]

Volkswagenboy ·

These pictures were taken obviosly after I removed the windows, guards, bonnet, interior and dash parts. This here is some of my crap which I have on my roof/wall! (Above the bonnet on the roof is a decklid!)

Volkswagenboy ·

So what do you guys think?
-Staggers.

oval TOFU ·

that rust loks nasty! But the decklid colour - I like! Is it going to be resprayed in that kinda metalic grey?

wish I had room on my shed's wall to hang panels!

Volkswagenboy ·

Yeah, That's the colour I want to keep, but it's a Blue-Grey-Metallic. (It kinda looks like Jak Rizzo's colour though, don't you think?) I love it, the rust shouldn't take much though.

On second thought, no it doesn't.

:jesus rises again!

Volkswagenboy ·

Same to you mate.
-Staggers.

butidontunderstand ·

madfun, so whats happening to it? its gonna be a racecar?

bond ·

yeah i was a little thrown too - especially by the title "racecar" buildup...... hehe :P

bajachris88 ·

Had heard his plans a while ago. This dudes got some good plans for it.

Just remember the seatbelts mate, cause this things gonna be flying. So gotta take me for a ride one day when u finish it. U can drive my baja for a day, and i drive ur supa dupa bug :P

Volkswagenboy ·

Yeah Karina, I'm planning to set it up as a street legal circuit racer (Lightwieght, great handling, rollcage, no interior and some horsepower) But it obviosly is not much of a racecar yet, hey Bond. But it will get there soon enough! Hey Chris, I'll have to take you up on that deal one day! (Maybe oneday we'll both finish them!) But don't worry, I'm planning to use 4 or 5 point harnesses!
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Hey, I removed the decklid and firewall today, gonna start working on the radiator in the back. (Anyone know where to buy a cheap aluminium radiator, roughly 3ft by 16 inches?)
Thanks to Chris for selling me the rear clip (Apron and Bumper bracket mount assembly)
Soon enough it'll be a bolt on unit.
-Staggers.

bond ·

you have u2u

Volkswagenboy ·

Hello Bond, I've been expecting you. There's no U2U yet!
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

There we go!
-Staggers.

buzzbug ·

heres the rims dude

Volkswagenboy ·

Yeah, definately gotta get me some of those! Thanks for the pic.
-Staggers.

sinecure ·

For the radiator, it's likely that an industrial radiator mob can build you one to your exact specs much cheaper than buying and adapting one. I did this for my Datsun 1600 - got a complete brass radiator built to my exact spec for less than $200 (ten years ago - but a car custom aluminium builder quoted me $600 at the same time).

Try this mob:

http://www.radiators-brisbane.com.au/

koolkarmakombi ·

Or get a radiator from one of the front cut importers for a less popular model. The wrx van dude got a huge daewooo one with thermofans for $180

Volkswagenboy ·

Cool, thanks guys I'll look into it.
-Staggers.

66deluxe ·

What engine you going to use?

Volkswagenboy ·

Most likely an EJ22 SOHC, but if I pick up something cheaper other than an EJ22 (Say an EJ20 or something) then I'll use that.
-Staggers.

bugbrained ·

hey staggers in tradelink drive theres a aluminiun boat builder there ( aquamaster ) he was doing aluminiun radiators for a guy , cutting up damaged ones then rewelding them . call in and say hi ask for paul the owner he might be able to look after you
cheers bugbrained

Volkswagenboy ·

Okay, thanks!
-Staggers.

blue_bug ·

here in the states they got ej25's in the wrx i think...not quite sure though...but that thing will fly with the ej20 or ej22...😂

Volkswagenboy ·

I hope so!
Here's an updated picture, no nasty suprises yet. There is rust though, but at least I know what I'm up against so far...

-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Okay,
I have the oil coolers and radiator dummy mounted now (Using two Magna oil coolers and a Magna radiator)
so soon I should have the air ducts made up.
Plans for Susie have slowed down after buying a V8 LandRover and planning Valla holiday, but as soon as I'm back in August I'll be saving for an engine!
-Staggers.

VWCOOL ·

A bit of reading for you!

Volkswagenboy ·

Thanks, it's a good read man. I'll look into those.
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Just a question to you body pro's...
Should I opt for a full sandblast of the body and pan, or just work on the sections bit by bit
(Hoping not to find out further down the track that I missed some rust)?
I'd also be getting my '68 blasted too if I decide to.
Thanks.
-Staggers.

malcolm ·

don,t sand blast the body the last thing you want to do is pit the metal.clean off as you go and youwant get lost in the repairs .
chemicaldipping is better as long as its nutrialized properly.

Volkswagenboy ·

Thanks for the tips/reccomendations, I might look into acid dipping.
-Staggers.

jhp1 ·

Gday mate Im toying with the idea of building a similsr setup from a well setup 71 Ive got laying around how hard will it be to set up the ej20 I was considering using an ej22t dont know if theres much diff just can get one cheap. Yours is looking good.

koolkarmakombi ·

Hey Staggers,

Use one of those blue 3m discs on a grinder, cheap, easy and doesnt rip all the paint off the inside where you cannot reach.

Why not put the engine from the land rover in it ;-)

kkk

bugbrained ·

i gotta get over staggers get the whole run down on the set up your going to use . looking good so far catch up soon

Volkswagenboy ·

Setting up the arse end will be the main thing, strenghtening it for the torque increase mainly.
Radiators are generally mounted in the spare wheel well, or above the gearbox somehow... I'm planning to do things different.
There's probably more people out there (On AVD) who could help you out better, as I'm only starting off really.
You'll need an adaptor plate obviously, but these are relatively cheap and generally come with a flywheel to suit.
They cost about $550 to $750, depending on who you buy them from.
Oh and for using my Land Rover V8, I love offroading too much!
-Staggers.

bajachris88 ·

am so envious of ur dry, level, cement floored work station... 🙁

But its kool hearing her progressing

Volkswagenboy ·

Okay so the box is out, most of the body mount bolts removed, front end and brake lines disconnected...
I'm definately happy with the condition of the pan,
needs a fair bit of work still but it's nothing major. I'll try to get the pan ready to be removed by next weekend.
Good news for me is the fact that the box is a single side plate, but I'll need to replace a few seals and gaskets before I use it.
I'm also trying to decide whether I should use my rear side windows for air intake to the radiator, or install a couple of fibreglass scoops into the actual body.
-Staggers.

butidontunderstand ·

does it look like a racecar yet? :P

Volkswagenboy ·

Not quite yet, but it's getting there!
-Staggers.

butidontunderstand ·

ahuh

Volkswagenboy ·

I've discovered one way to f**k your back before the age of 20...
Lift a Beetle body off its pan, BY YOURSELF!
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Okay so the body is now hanging from the roof!
I'm extremely thrilled to see the condition of the heater channels and pan.
So far the right front end of the heater channel is the worst, and the only section of heater channel with rust!
It's quite noticeable that the rear section of the left channel and pan half have been replaced, due to the lumpy welds!
A few hours grinding and rewelding should have them looking like new.
On the pan the main part with rust is under the cross member where the brake master cylinder mounts.
I picked up a few handy tips from Alan (Dasdubber) the last time I was over which will help to repair those parts.
There's alot of surface rust all over, but thankfully nothing detrimental!
Early days I know, but everything takes time!
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Damn Photobucket image resizing!
-Staggers.

66deluxe ·

Yep, i lifted a body of the pan by myself once, stood inside and pressed my shoulders against the roof and lifted it was lighter than i first thought, then a mate came over and we lifted it of. But i hope your back is alright now Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

The back's fine but it made me realise how much I need to get a gym membership!!
-Staggers.

bugbrained ·

staggers what are YOU doing mate just give me a call next time you need a lift👍

Volkswagenboy ·

Hehe Okay Jeff!
Man I need to get my arse round and do some work on that '68 too!
I have another pair of doors and some bits and bobs for it now.
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Yesterday I cleaned up the gearbox and today I started polishing it.
Why polish the gearbox you ask?
Because I need something to do in my lunchtimes!

-Staggers.

bugbrained ·

no worries brenton im allways around somewhere, been checking on the tarp for you its hanging in well . you going to warrick drags your welcome to come for a run in the kombi with me :thumb

Volkswagenboy ·

I might be, not too sure yet though.
Thanks for checking on the tarp! I was thinking about that the other night with all the dang rain about.

But anyway... to the box.
I bought myself a die grinder and 90 degree surface prep tool (Small 2 inch sander/grinder), both pnumatic. Been working on getting a nice old shine.

I hate the look of all the dang cast marks so they've been filed off, and the ribs are now smooth.

🙂

-Staggers.

Dasdubber ·

I know how fiddly it is to get into all those ribs - have fun!

Just a word of warning, I polished the ribs on my box and they tarnished/corroded/whatever you call it....I then repolished and clearcoated but still happenned to a degree. Maybe look into what you can do to keep it shiny apart from getting under the car and polishing by hand every weekend!

Volkswagenboy ·

Okay thanks for the tip!
I'll look into it some more.
-Staggers.

Volkswagenboy ·

Okay so thisarvo (After I recovered from the rum 'n' rona's last night) I stripped the rest of my pan, bought a 17mm inhex socket to remove IRS arms.
All's rosey, just have to send the pan off now to be blasted and primered ready for repairs and rustbullet (Which I will need to buy soon).
After that I'll start scrounging 'round for some decent type three squareback arse end parts (Bigger brakes, heavier springrate to make the engineer happy).
-Staggers.
