Would anyone actually ever swap a buggy body for a bug body?

No promises, was just wondering. Just outta interest. Was thinking. I think to much.

What would be worth more? A complete baja vw body, no rust, or a fibreglass lwb buggy tub.

Would anyone here consider a swap like that?

I hear a lot of Positives and Negatives from each, but soaking up sun in a rag top was fun today. Neva thought of this before, what would be the case for a question like this.

i would imagine the buggy body would be worth more as it would cost more to create in the first place, just a guess tho

yeah. very very slim chance. Random thought.

Was just told by a few offroaders, some of them just take unrusted bug bodies to the tip to put on fibreglass buggy tubs.

Interesting how they are treated worthless. haha.

Chris, save up and fix it properly. There are no quick fixes, but proper fixes last and are actually worth the effort. Buggies are not good daily drivers anyway. Wait till you have a company car and big shed before you buy one.

yeah, thats the reality of what will happen.

I just love the open aspect of a convertible or rag top. Even if i decided to chop the roof of the baja for a sunroof or somethin. But the prob is the slightest mod on the roof would make a weak roof weaker. and i would be an idiot to cruise with a chopped roof baja (whether it be just a rag top) without some form of bars or support to keep it from collapsing. That costs more money, more weight, a blue plate... and yeah.

Shame. Anyone else got any uncomplicated 'non-engineering approval needed' methods of bracing and strengthing up the roof without barwork?

what kinda % of the roof can be cut without it being classed as a convertible and needing roll bars by law?

What u mean?

it will be easier to do once its regoed. jace (Manx_xtc) said i should have got my car registered as a bug before i made it a baja. Sux i learn the hardways sometimes.

for it to be legal in QLD you need to get DOT approval for the baja mods anyway so registering it before or after makes no difference. unless u wanna be dodgy.

If you do spend the time on it now and build a nice Baja you could end up with a machine like Wes' car. It's great.

Chop tops have a real down sides. You have to stiffen the chassis, the body can be anything from great to awful depending on lots of things you cannot control, there are so many parts you will have to custom make, they leak like all convertables, they are near impossible to lock properly, etc, etc.

STICK WITH A SOLID TOP BAJA. Water proof, cheap, strong, easy to get parts for. The potential for useful mods is endless. Again look at Wes' car. 5 years down the track great improvements continue. For a car that goes bush but copes as a street hack a baja is very good value. Better value than a 4wd in many cases and cooler too.

SO STOP DREAMING AND START WORKING!!!

Get off the forum and go do some work on it right now, or go earn some money to work on it with. capish? 👍

Thanx fellas.

u gotta be careful with most convertbles as they were built in the 80s when the rta just didntgiveashit and if they run outta rego its almost impossible to get them re-engineered
they were so badly built not strenghtend underneath and the roll bars well.....
most of the ones built back then just had a roll bar that sat on top of the quarter panel where the b pillar was cut off
a guy in ballina built a few convertbles a cupl of years ago and to be legal now the roll bars have to be attactached to chassis bracing, have a cross bar to the windscreen and have a bar from the center roll bar down to the rear wheel arches
i'm watching a 74 Lbug vert on ebay atm
its a total pile of shit thats unregisterd and some idiots bid alsot $1500 on it it will never pass a engineers insp as the roll bar is like most of them and is only for show and not even atatched to the floorpan
some ppl just have no idea just think vw convertbles are sooo cool LOL

I wasn't talking fullconvert.

Like rag top :P Lol

But yeah, they are done pretty shabby. Have a friend in Buccan with the same issues. He is doing a resto.
The sun and open aspect is great, but the way they ALL finish at teh quarter windows, just looks fugly.

Rag tops on other hand, look great if done right. remember those matchbox baja cars that were posted here as pics, with the open roof and the big oil scoop on the roof just behind the rag top? [Would suk if the oil radiator snapped a hose pouring hot oil onto the people inside, but besides that, looks pretty slick].

Ah well. Basic baja it is.
Only way to get it on the road ASAP

Being the owner of the ragtop you rode in, I too love the sun'n'wind feeling, but Chris just finish what you've started. I'll help you with the aircon setup we spoke about to give you the wind effect!

But seriously, finish this project as a hard top, get it registered and think about ragtops later.
Trust me, I have a dodgy ragtop setup.
The ONLY way to do it is properly, which means $$$!
