I want to remove and bend the shifter in my Sabre.
I've done this in many other cars (I'm short!), but I want to be careful as I have 0 experience with VW's.
Could someone give me some basic instruction so's I don't do something that spectacularly stuffs it?
Thanks,
Mick.

Thanks Marc, I'm at Sunnybank. Are you available during the week next week? I'm a shift worker and my next day off is next Wednesday. I can bring the car to you if that's easier.

Big Up for Marc! Thanks again mate for your invaluable help. After some testing, I've decided it needs another 10 mm, so I might just be game enough to try it myself (when I get my vise back!) this time.
Cheers,
Mick.

Good to see fellow Vee Dub owners helping each other..
Removing the VW Gearshifter and hoping it will go back the way it came out... doesn't usually work...
You need to have the reverse lockout plate correctly placed so that You have to push the gearlever down to engage reverse...... instead of hitting it instead of 2nd..
and You can have short throws and long throws.....
Once You know the tricks.... its very easy.....

Honestly, without Marc there, I think it would have ended in blood, tears and a tow to a VW mechanic.
I LOVE learning how to do something, SO much more satisfying than having it done!
When I come off night shift, I might visit you to remove and 'coax' a little more bend out of it, Marc, if that's OK with you.
Thanks again specifically to Marc, and to aussieveedubbers.com in general, you guys ROCK WELL HARD!
Cheers,
Mick.

Thanks again Marc, you've proven once again to be a great help. The quick shift is AWESOME Nick! Marc helped me fit it today and it works great.
Thanks for identifying the broken/missing bump stops too, Marc. Car is booked in at Leons tomorrow.
Cheers,
Mick.

Thats great to see other VW owners helping each other.
make sure You don't forget to grease the gearshift linkage and lock out plate....
Best grease is Lithium based Moly grease,
Castrol brand is sold at BIG W.....
Its also great for Your front end....
The front end needs to be jacked up to take the weight off the front end....
then grease all the grease nipples You can find....
If its like mine You will only find 4...
but if Yours has 8 -10 whatever...
grease them all.... the Lithium Moly grease will make everything last longer and wear much less...

Yeh, big ups for the the VW 'helping spirit' alive! The Castrol stuff you should be using is the EPM2 (I'm pretty sure) stuff... Dont forget to do your pedal cluster if there's a grease nipple on there too (my oval does...)
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
haha cool mick - glad you like the quick shift!
i swear i said no bump stops? :P ehehe
keep in touch - hopefully see you at Harry's next friday?

Bump stop metal retainer with no rubber - now BANG stop!
Took it to Leons this morning and his advice is to cut off the original metal retainer and weld on some units that support a 1 inch stopper instead of the factory 2+ inch. He's checking out what to get and will let me know as soon as he finds something that will do the job.
Also checking a price on a new radiator (small leak) with thermatic controller as the car runs at about 40 - 60 degrees at the mo with the thermo fan always on, and rear disc conversion.

Hi Mick
No trouble mate was fun to help out another VWer.
Thanks to you for letting me have a drive of the Sabre, That thing is awsome I did not want to give the keys back, I had them in my pocket for about 20 minutes before you realized i still had them.
My son looked out the window of the house and saw the Sabre now he wants me to keep one of the Type3 pans for him so he can build a Sabre like car for himself, this is coming from a VW hater!!!! He said that is the koolest car he has seen.
You can't go wrong with Leon's he thinks outside the square for ideas to fix things and to make it cheap and easy.

I'll come over on the weekend and drop off that steering wheel. Maybe your son would like to go for a spin?
BTW, you're actually the first person other than me to have driven the Sabre so I'm glad to hear that you like it as much as I do.
I think Leon and I may end up becoming fairly well acquainted.😀
