Stock 1600 TP. Book setting 5deg ATDC
Reset points & adjusted timing via a strobe.
Starting @ 10deg ATDC I slowly rotate the dist & watch the light go 9,8,7deg ATDC then WHAMMO it jumps to 10deg BTDC????? & the idling speed doubles. I can't get anything in between . Leaving set at this point, it pings its tits off. Comments??

5° ATDC is for Cali smog bugs only

Retime it to 7.5° and it will stop pinging

? 5deg ATDC acoording to: www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm#a7273m

Dist No. : JFUR
0 231 167 049
113 905 205AJ

At 7.5deg ATDC it don't seem real happy- tends to stall.

Wot I don't get is why I can't dial in say 3 deg ATDC? It just leaps to abt 10 BTDC albeit @ a higher idle. It's like something just grabs the rotating table with the weights advances the ign all of a sudden??

When u crank down the list in the ref above, u can see my dist.

It IS 7.5! Thanks Guys

The jump is prob due to my NOT disconnecting & plugging the vac hose!

Sheees! Still learning after 4 decades!

No it's def 7.5ATDC

Take a look at the link.

The cali bug is there too & it's 5ATDC as u said.

There's no way mine runs at 7.5 BTDC. It's "Ping City"!

Not saying you are wrong - just never seen one of then dual vacuum dizzies in Australia.
All those 5 ATDC tune up jobbies are dual VAC

HMMMM!
I think we r saying the same thing but have I stuffed up the terminology?
My liquid paper mark is on the notch on the pulley but it shows on the strobe as firing after the crankcase split ie the light spot is flashing 10-15mm on the RHS of the crankcase split so is that ATDC or BTDC???

OK motor spins clockwise

Am "guessing" the notch on the pulley is TDC.

" Measure on the rim of the pulley 11.5 mm to the right of the TDC notch on the rim of the crankshaft pulley. This is 7.5o BTDC; mark this point also with white paint."

So what you are seeing is your engine fore about 8-9 degrees BEFORE TDC

BEFORE - left of TDC

AFTER - right of TDC

OK I get it now!
I have been using the system I am used to on pommie engines- MG Jags etc
There u mark TDC on the pulley and the eng has a saw-tooth bracket on the timing chain case corresponding to the various degree marks that u can line up the flashing light on.
My KG, when running right, lights up the TDC notch abt 10mm past the apex (crankcase join) & to my mind thats ATDC!
I think that's how the Oldvolkshome reference I use describes it too, because my dist (113 905 205 AJ) is DEF shown as 5ATDC- WTF! Whatever works!!
