K fellas, got the gearbox out, etc, thinking of clutch ideas, but got a few issues.
1. The shifter, cause of the semi auto, it doesn't move in the position of 1st for a manual bug, even with the gearbox out, this is apparently due to a backing plate. What do i need to do to rectify this? How?
2. Got a manual pedal assembly that fits, however, it goes through the tunnel, but the metal fuel line is rubbing on the top of the pedal assembly ( is slightly thicker in that part compared to the semi auto, cause it didn't have the clutch cable hook and the rod that the hook is on. Wat do i do here? The rubbing would eventually wear a hole in my fuel line which i don't want. and i dont want to bash it outta the way and put a kink in it.

i have no idea about this 'backing plate'.
currently am trying to get a copy of the idiots guide.
i got drills, grinders etc. can i mod the original backing plate for the manual box? do i need to?

leave the semi auto box in - dont see too many semi-auto bajas....

You need a manual shift rod (the one in the pan) as they are different lengths, plus the manual gearstick and plate bits
Carefully tap/belt/bent the fuel line outta the way - better, fit a new, larger one as the std one is next to useless

think there is any chance of a semi auto baja working alright as a semi auto?
if so, i am set. i got enough bits to make an engine (minus generator and fan).
hey, wat da hell anyways, might as well do it, loosing no dollars. got it already. might as well give it a go. Only prob is, what would i do with those big tranny fluid reservoir and vaccum canisters? When looking at teh baja from behind, with the offroad guards on, looked like my car had testicles! (big round things on each side)

lol, cheers mate. I should have looked more into a manual conversion before tearing the car apart (its not too bad). But i didn't really know what was involved. thought it could be as simple as installing a manual gearbox, manual pedals, and a clutch tube.
I did get a quote off custom offroad, and they seemed fairly good. But from what it sounds like, that was just about installing the clutch tube, and adjusting the pedals/gearbox for the cable. nuffin to do with backing plates, shifter rods, and all that jazz.
As they say, when it doubt, just leave out. 😀

Plus a shift rod and gearstick bits. easy!

yeah.
with the way i'm going though, not sure if i will have $300 to spend on all that.
want it on the road ASAP at the moment, as a working car. and gradually upgrade as i go. I haven't enough to get another road worthy one, and already, i'm getting attatched to this one. 1st project, 1st baja, 1st grinded on it, 1st started attacking rust on it, 1st of mine to have an original 69 radio in it, and the 1st thing i had that reallly made people scratch their heads when i said it was semi auto. 😀
hey vwcool, u seem pretty pro with all this. have seen u over time in quiet a few threads with this kinda professionality. You are/were a volkswagen serviceman or something?

Nah, like many on here, 'been there, done that'. I'm just a VW junkie... and I learnt - and I still learn - the hard way! Always happy to help
