How good was this story.
It was good to see someone shame the dumb arses that think it is ok to get behind the wheel and put the life of you and I and our families at risk.
My favourite was the old betty that downed half a bottle of wine and drove home.

Drink drivers really get up my arse.. but at the same time the system is definitely flawed. A guy I know, who used to be my friend but as a result of the following isn't anymore, used to drink drive all the time. One night we had all been out at a club and were well and truly gone and he had offered to drive us cos he 'didnt want to drink'. Just before we left the club we found out that his "coke" had actually been bourbon and coke and i said there's no way that he or us are getting in his car... even to the point where i said if he didnt give me the keys i was gonna knock him flat and take them... at which point the security guard (intelligent fella) said "no way... you aren't taking his keys"...

So... three of us get in a taxi and **** gets in his car... I wake up the next morning to the phone ringing... "I F***ING CRASHED MY CAR... WHY DID YOU LET ME DRIVE?" ... right... my fault... then his mum yelled at me... then the police decided he could keep his licence til the court hearing... During this time.. he drank... he drove... and HE WROTE ANOTHER CAR OFF!!!

Judges verdict... He loses his licence for a year or so because he's... wait for it... "NOT ENOUGH OF A THREAT TO SOCIETY"...

The guy wrote off two cars and caused $5000 damage to a building... claimed to be a victim... AND THE JUDGE LET HIM GO!!!

It really amazes me... it really does!

I missed the story, but I was amazed by the conversation between a couple of the kids that I work with. They both admitted to drink driving regularly (every couple of weeks) - one commented that he would only drink drive if someone else agreed to be a passenger, in this way they could both look out for things he might hit. The other then claimed that he actually drives better when drunk!

At this point I stopped the conversation and informed them of what I thought of their actions (I cannot repeat it here as it wasn't exactly PG rated).

I lost a close friend 2 years ago (Mothers Day) when he was run over by a drunk driver as he walked to Church with his family.

Perhaps if instead of fines and loss of license, the car was impounded or confiscated, people would take it more seriously. I have hear lots of stories about people driving with suspended licenses. They get caught and guess what, their license suspension is extended!

We need to make the punishment so harsh and unavoidable, that everybody is shit scared of driving, even if they think there is only a minute chance they are over the limit. The problem is that driving is seen as a god given right, not the privelidge it is.

It we had as many people die every year in forklift or crane accidents as die on the roads, there would be outrage. But we just accept the road toll as an inevitable side effect of driving.

I've never driven when drunk or even tipsy. It's not worth it in case of things turning pear shaped.
As the ads say, you only have to be 'a little bit over' and it makes a big lot of difference to reflexes and perception.
