i'm using a "gizzmo", not gigantic, but less than $250, dual stage (pre shift then limit), best of all, no chips. pushbutton programming of both stages. runs of any tacho.

Just watch the police and shift lights. My friends 02 WRX got defected for having one.
Put it down low so the light doesn't shine out the front window.
I have got a different style light and a buzzer out of a RX-3 rotary that we used to own.
Just a word of warning.

I've got an autometer 5' that I'm happy to move on, 10k rpm with single stage shift light. Its a silver pro comp and I'm happy to let it go for what it cost. In case your wondering why I just can't fit all the guages I have in and make it look right so something has to give.
what do I need for a subaru ej20T motor in autometer ?
and 555 bug how many $

yeah ive got a Autometer 5"monster tacho in my bus, yeah i know is a bit ricer but does the job nicely and was cheap so i couldnt resist it. yeah the darn shift light is bloody bright, so dont look straight at it when driving, ull be quite blind!!lol! as i found out one night. i know it is a bit rediculus in a kombi, when a kombi can ony pull around 4000rpm, but it is helpfull when tuining the donk with good rpm intervals and ull know when u have accidently stalled at lights, not that i drag my bus., my tip, go the autometer, dont get some cheap junk brand!
cheers
a few ?
what did you pay for it ?
what motor are you running ?
what signal did you need for it ?
i think they are universal neil?
and i think they retail for 4 hundred and something? could be wrong but its around there.

Jaycar (I think) do an HSV-style one as a kit - a litle light that the driver can see, but not the bloke three cars behind you
Pay your debts, CxxT
What are these things for?
are they for people who don't know when to shift?
or is it when the music is to loud?
just cant see why you need em!

Keeping it real !
Sorry, but in my opinion (remember, just an opinion, not the gospel), shift lights are a Waste Of Time.
I dont like them, but I am a little old fashioned I guess 🙂
If you cant see why you'd need one, then you dont need one.
If you are racing, and you have a car that revs out fast then its very handy. A tacho needle doesnt catch your eye as it hits 7000rpm, a shift light does.
and it makes you fully sick when your got one in your daily driver make sure you mount a couple of exterior guages to complete the look:P

Yes indeedy. That's why I've got one in the truck, which can get away from you when you're not paying attention. 0 - 11 000 RPM, leaving ample room for engine development. Shift light comes on at 4,100 RPM - not that I ever go that high. Bought the tach with shift light new on ebay for $40. I'm sure the Autometer ones are worth the extra - but I don't have that to spare.

The Autogage Shift lite tach is good value and I was told that they actually have more reliable circuitry in them by someone who was selling the more expensive autometer tachs as well.

Fair point, I can see why they would be helpful on something like a carbed rotary (ie with no fuel cut or rev limiter), but on something like an EJ20T, with a rev limiter.....
Each to their own I guess.
Useful on any motor that revs out quick and you cant keep your eye glued to the tach, And you dont want to be shifting on the rev limiter anyway, I know my Type 1 motor revs out quick enough to make it useful!

Anyone used or thought of using the black one on this page. Has Oil, Temp and Boost all in one, just wish it looked better!

rev limiters can do bad things to engines and should only be there for missed gears, or when the upcoming corner is just a little too far away for the gear you're in. I totally understand where you're coming from though. I'm sure most of those sold are for bling value, but they can have a purpose.
The Mazda 121 Metro I hired several years ago could have done with a shift light, it buzzed the limiter several times :P
