Ok heres the problem.
Driving my 1600 Beetle and suddenly it drops its guts and i lose my oil all over town.
Ok Found the problems Oil filter seal has died so I changed the oil and bought a new oil filter.
She is fine for all of yesterday.
Started her up this morning and same thing happened oil started poring out.
Check to see where it was coming from and looks like its coming from the oil filter again.
Removed it and found that the top of the filter had split away from the bottom of it.
How the hell does that happen? 🙁

By the way my car sound so cool with out the muffler attached. Had to remove it to get it on my ramps.

High pressure from cold oil, no relief valve before oil filter. Try using berg pump cover and only good quality oil filter like on stock type 4 setup

Berg pump cover has adjustable valve in cover to prevent overpressurization of filter

Stupid question, but you didn't leave the rubber seal dry and overtighten it?
A POSSE AD ESSE.

I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

You have two releif valves in a 1600 Beetle engine...
One on earlier engines....
Look under the engine near the crankshaft pulley...
They look like the heads of two Very large screws...
You undo them with a Large flat head screwdriver...

The relief Valves shouldn't be tight....
they should be able to move up & down....

When the engine is cold and the oil pressure is High, the oil doesn't flow thru the oil cooler....
and the pressure can be very high....
resulting in burst oil filters... if fitted....

Pull Your relief valves out and clean them ....
and clean the bores they fit into....

Some books say there is a thread inside the relief valves to pull them out if they are stuck....
but I've been told by some VW owners that they don't have the thread...??

Mine just popped out... when i cleaned Mine....

Best of Luck

Lee

I prefer to use on My Mitsubishi Lancer, the Oil Filters with an' o' ring instead of the troublesome square type rubber ring....
I always oil them... and they can be put on by hand and taken off by hand...

Much better than using a tool... in an impossible place...

I had a Mechanic put an oil filter on [square rubber seal] without oiling it.... Took Me hours to get it off...
finally hammer & chisel job... as the rest of the filter had been destroyed trying to get it off...
[Apoligies if this is off topic..]

I have heard of filters being blown apart when the oil is cold and the relief pressure valves stuck...

Run a Z9 filter as it has a built in pressure by pass, Also check that the pressure relief value/values in your case are in good order.
Ive had to ream one out and fit an oversized piston before. As it was getting stuck.:thumb
Your problem could be a number of things but gest off luck and keep an eye on you pressure light as we all know what happens if you drive with out oil.:o

The filter that I put in was a Z9 thats the one that blew its top off.
And yes it is the O ring type of rubber seal and yes I did oil it.
So I dont know why it blew its top yet still working on it.

just as a matter of interest what brand was it because if it was a ryco or one of the other big companies they will replace it if their filter had manufacturing defect

Here is a picture of the filter.
Thought it was interesting.
Never seen this sort of thing happen before.

i have but only with the cheaper "no names mentioned" filters supplied by tight arse customers, try a ryco they tend to have a higher manufacturing standard

I don't think any filter will work, It takes alot of pressure to deform an oil filter like that. It has even deformed the base of the filter. You will have to check your oil pressure first or you will keep balloning your filters.

Here is a picture of the relief valve.
As you can see there is some scoring on the sides.
Any ideas on what could cause that?
Also where could I get replacement parts for it?

I was tld never to run a z9, as they will split if your using a 30mm pump. Try the type 4 model (not sure on model number) but they are a little smaller and also stronger i have been told. They fit the same thread and base as the z9.

I have burst valvoline filters before. If you look inside it you will see the perforations are barely open, so it cops a lot of pressure. Also check your oil lines are the right way around.

Use a golf deisel filter, this has a decent blowoff valve inside it so it wont burst. You get what you pay for.
