Quickie - front disc brakes on the kombi make an agonising squealing noise when going slow. Have done for the last 15,000km and doesn't go away when pedal pressed.

They work fine, and there's plenty of meat on the pads.

Any ideas?

I'm getting odd looks in Woollies car park and think the wife may soon threaten divorce if not fixed.

I once had that problem with a front disc of a Sunbeam Alpine. It turned out to be a stone jammed between the pad and the disc which left a big groove in the disc. Is there a groove in one of the discs? For that to happen for 15,000 klicks; I doubt if a stone would last that long, so I don't know what it could be.

Ooops! I'm sorry about my previous post. The stone was not between the pad and the disc it was between the backing plate and the disc. That is why is squeeled and applying the brakes made little difference. If you have a groove on the backing plate side of a disc, then that could be your problem.

there is a metal plate called an anti squeal shim which goes between the disk pad and the piston, if its missing or misaligned then its squeal city, unless your like me and live at the end of a 6km stretch of dusty dirt road , I always have a squealing problem until after a couple of brake applications on the bitumen.
