Hi ppls

How u can give me some ideas on what it is, and what to do.

I got the 61 from teh mechanics the other day. WHilst Im there, he told me he thinks i have a 1200 or 1300 gear box, but a 1500 motor. At that point he said, the car is jumping out of fourth...

We were thinking of locating a 1500, getting it rebuilt, then dropping it into the car...with the motor attached of course 🙂 Not what I wanted to do, considering it would cost so much, but hey...there u go. I want this car to be driving like a dream.

But, since driving it this weekend, I have noticed it is jumping out of second on occassions as well. Add to it that it also occassionally grinding going into those gears...so it may not be just 'smaller gear box, large motor problem'...

Can anyone shed some light. If its going to give me problems...would rather have it looked at b4 valla than after...doh...there goes all my spending & play money. Especially if its sourcing a gearbox to have rebuilt...and no...i cant do this stuff myself...i have no idea where to begin...

thats why i have the mechanics number in memory on my mobile!...small things...ok...big things...no.

cheers in advance for all ur info.help

Just grabbed my idiots guide for ya. Heres some quotes:

"The two things that indicate a worn transmission are hanging up putting it into gear and popping out of gear."

"All models: The troubles your transaxle can have with age are moaning, leaking and popping out of gear...If, with age, the gear shift starts to pop out of one or several gears or if it's hard to put into any gear, you have to face a transmission overhaul or sell the car. If it won't stay in gear, there's time before the trans gives up completely but watch the oil level in the trans box very closely, put in the trans additive and start collecting the bread for a rebuilding effort or another car. "

Thats all i can find donna on it in the book. Hmm, ur bug this tranny is in, is it IRS? makes the job easier, u need a special 12 point Allen key, to unbolt the CVs. Removing and refitting the tranny is all in this book too. Done it myself, U shouldnt' have any worries.

Well, thats what its looking like unfortunately Donna, according to the book.

betta off getting urself a 2nd hand one that works, cheaper than getting one overhauled. Unless u can develope a cheap system of holding the gear stick in place, passenger or somehting? lol, or some clips... something cheap.

Me being on a low budget, tis options i would look at, lol.

I had a gear box jumping out of gear and hard on gear selection. Turns out the rubber coupling under the back seat behind the little metal plate covering the centre tunel was worn out. Imagine that a 40 year old piece of rubber under contant use wearing out. There is also a plastic guide for the shifter rod, this also wears out. It might pay to check these 2 items first. It will cost considerably less.
