can you retrofit a new engine compartment seal without removing the engine in a 72 superbug?

I believe it May be possible... but VERY difficult...
Its hard enough with the engine out.....
If You don't want to take the engine out...

Use the early type engine seal....
Its very similar to the seal that goes around the top of the tinware behind the engine....
around the firewall...
there are two pieces of flat rubber sticking out...
One side goes on top and the other under the tinware...
the two flaps are approx 30mm wide....
I just gave Mine to My Son for His 56 Beetle...
they would be much easier to handle than the late one...
I will probably use one next time in My engine bay...
The late model ones are a pain....

thanks lee there is a small section missing (approx300mm on drivers side).thought it may pay to change it after reading about dirty air intakes etc.
