can anyone help me out just spent hrs replacing oil cooler seals on my type 3 wagon started it up and dang still leaking. mayb its not the seals its the oil cooler leaking . maybe the oil relieve valve , im installing the wrong seals , the red seals where there replaced them with the same type . any ideas with what could be wrong ?????:cry
do not want to rain on your parade but......I would be checking for block cracks.usually around #3 cylinder. spray with degreaser, then wipe with clean rag, spray again and the cracks will show as fine lines. hope I am wrong. good luck.

And if this happens to indeed be the case.... you don't want to be running the engine anymore than is neccessary until the problem is fixed or the engine replaced... the cracks only get bigger, eventually resulting indirectly in a catastrophic loss of oil and hence oil pressure and a screwed engine. 🙁
case cracks are bad ju-ju indeedies! :puke

Does Your type 3 oil cooler have an oil sender around the front of the engine?
My Beetle has a type 3 oil cooler [doghouse] and it has a sender around the front...
not sure where it would be on a tyre 3 engine, but when I first started My engine oil spewed from this oil sender as
it was leaking....
I just had a look, and the sender wasn't actually leaking, the sender screws,
into a solid square block, and a bolt goes thru the solid block, well the bolt did not have
a copper washer under its head, or between the solid block and the engine....
thats what fixed it....
Maybe this could be Your problem....
or You have a leaky oil cooler or oil cooler seals...
You must use the correct ones...
Red, green or ??

If it turns out to be your cooler, I have one here. It used the green seals though.

Hi,
I have black, red and a pinky colour seals and they are all for the small holes....
I have green seals with the larger holes...
But on My engine I have the seals with small holes on one side and large holes on the other....
small holes on My 1500 engine block and large holes for the type 3 oil cooler...
You shouldn't do the oil cooler bolts up too tight either as the seals can compress in the centre
which can slow the oil flow down....

Have you put the correct aluminium spacer washers at bolt locations? If these aren't in place you will also compress the seals too much. If these spacers don't match the seals there will also be a leak.

thanks for the input guys much appreciated . wellllll through process of elimination removed the tineware dellortos generator checked oil coiler again ( looks fine ) checked seals where seated properlly yup . degreased said block around 3 and 4 looking for cracks nope looked good there , bit of vibration grooves from tinware .

autobug i did notice there where no copper washers for said oil coiler so im taking tinware off again when i have a chance to get it powder coated will put copper washers in then . cheers for the advice guys i still smillin stoked in the way the 1835 goes 👍
Hi,
Bugbrained,
The oil sender is painted Yellow...
the square block is green and the You can see the bolt that goes thru the block....
Its actually a hollow bolt and the oil flows thru it...
a very thin copper washer either side stopped it leaking.
