What difference, if any is there between the plastic like gaskets that i'm finding on the beetle already (around the fuel pump, carbie etc) and the paper like ones i bought to replace them?

any performance or longevity differences?

Some paper gaskets, once compressed etc, and taken apart do look like plastic but are really thick paper or cardboard....
or Maybe they have something added to them ...
to make them look like that....
but You will always get just plain old paper gaskets...
even from Elring [German]....

You can get a plastic gasket maker in a tube, which means You don't need gaskets, but many people add the red plastic to the paper gaskets....
Maybe thats what You have seen....
I've seen them too....... lol...
or maybe the VW factory uses different gaskets...??

I miss the asbestos muffler exhaust gaskets....
they were much better than the ones now available....
but they are now illegal....
