As an audiologist, I would condone the use of ear plugs for any moderately loud exhausts - without a sound level meter is hard to measure....but below are the maximum durations you can be exposed to the noise exposure levels for, before damage starts to occur (it is cumulative so you won't notice it straight away):
85dBA 8 hours
86dBA 6 hours 21 minutes
87dBA 5 hours 2 minutes
88dBA 4 hours
89dBA 3 hours 10 minutes
90dBA 2 hours 31 minutes
91dBA 2 hours
92dBA 1 hour 35 minutes
93dBA 1 hour 16 minutes
94dBA 1 hour
95dBA 47 minutes 37 seconds
96dBA 37 minutes 48 seconds
97dBA 30 minutes
98dBA 23 minutes 49 seconds
99dBA 18 minutes 59 seconds
100dBA 15 minutes
Sorry to hijack, just thought it might be relevant for those doing a long drive wihta loud exhaust. I am hoping to get my noise plugs (custom) next week before the trip!
Cheers

Nerd. Im taking my top-o-the-line NRMA call out phone number and beer, with some more beer in case the first lot of beer runs out and leaves me stranded.

Hi
I thought I was prepared when a cluch cable broke near Honrsby on the way home one year, wipped out the spare clutch cable only to find the hook had worn off the cluch pedal, so I will be carrying a spare cluch pedal, clutch cable with wing nut along with all the other stuff mentioned.

I'm with phatrat, once you reach the 'wide open spaces' population density decreases........break down in the wrong place you could wind up either in a government hippy relocation strategy or doin hard time in some centrelink tayter cultivation initiative................*shudders*
I know I will make sure I have enough money in the bank for a bus fare home

You forgot a fuel filter. Either check and replace before leaving, or carry a spare. They have a nasty habit of causing problems at the wrong time.
I also use Valla as my two year fuel line inspection schedule. The main line from the tank to the pump was fine, but the lines from there looked fatigued, escpecially since I drive approx 100kms a day in Qld. Last Friday night I replaced all the lines from the fuel pump to the carbs, and re-wired the clamps to the carbs. An oil and filter change is also recommended, and check the breather is okay.
Last night, i changed my oil, clean my strainer, adjusted my timing, adjusted my point's gap, checked my plug's gap and colour, cleaned my carb and lubed it, checked the fan belt tension and wear, grease my front end, adjusted the steering box freeplay, adjusted a link pin's freeplay, tightened a nut on my front gearbox mount that was nearly falling off!, picked all the small stones out of my front tyres tread, added sound insulation to my floor pan, vacuumed the whole lot, lubed my door hinges. I still need to anifog my interior glass and RainX the outside if I have any left... I can't be stuffed washing the car before I go...
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
Im taking clothes, CDs, alcohol, tic tacs. anything else will just slow me down
So nearly 20 years of clubbing all night should have me with no head left?
