As the hardcore mofo that I am, i'm going to the snow tomorrow after driving back from Valla...
I left on sunday arvo and caught the loverly storm on my way from Valla to Sydney. My little oval wipers did pretty much FA. I was just following the two tail lights in front of me...
I had a couple german guys in a van (not VW) say hi to me coz i was wearing my POLITZEI tshirt and was filling up my oval. They started to speak german to me when i told them, "Ich sprecken kleine deutsch.".... i had no idea what they were saying... friendy guys though!
No drama on the trip, except the night driving was harrowing - semi trailers screaming past in the rain, my shitty headlights not doing thier job, wankers with thier fricken fog lights AND high beams on sitting behind me for about 20kms.. only to realise late that they are blinding the crap out of me.
6 hours later at around 9pm, i find a motor inn that has a vacancy (i pretty much had to drive right around Sydney's outskirts to even find one in the first place..) so i hve a shower and crawl into my sleeping bag liner coz i don't trust the bed sheets, and settle in for a well needed sleep.
Left the motel at 830 the next morning and actually headed in the right direction (ask VWFOOL what a navigator i am) and drove non stop to Gundagai coz I needed
1) fuel
2) lunch
3) the dunny
(not in that order!)
then on I went to Wodonga for a bit more fuel.. then pretty much nonstop to home in Melb! so excluding stops, i think i took about 9.5 hours to drive from Syd to Melb.. not bad... I averaged about 8.5-9L/100km on the way home with a mix of driving in the rain, drafting behind semi's, and sitting on 90 - 110kph...
that's my story...

Glad you made it safe and sound Chris. Me and Oliver made it home in good time along with Dean in our slip stream. I was a hell ride but it had to be done. Hats off to you and anybody from Melburg who did the trip in there Dub.
Cheers to all the great people I met up with. A big thanks to the Sydney Massive for making Valla the Experience it was. Also to the possums for not jumping on my head this year, although they would of made a great hat for the cold wet evenings we had.

Hey Chris good to see you got back to Melb all safe and sound mate. That 2800k's is a long haul in an old VW. I know I am pretty stuffed today after a 13hour stint from Valla to Euroa yesterday . O'nited there and did the last 200ks this morning. Karmann ran like a dream there and back. Just needed regular fuel infusion every 250 to 300k's. Fuel economy was absolutely crap at 12 to 13ltr per 100.
But it was a great weekend, bring on 2008
Woo Hoo .......
Rod and I are finally home !!!!
Trip was pretty uneventful apart from some tool in a new black alfa who decided that he wanted the front end of a beetle cabrio as a quarter panel on his car and tried to cut me off, thank goodness for superb stopping power and then to top it off he then got pissed as Rod was driving on the slow side to try and keep Kate and I on the straight and narrow and then flew past him and jumped in front slammed the brakes and then went to get out of his car. I have never seen the Oval stop so quick, nor have I saw Rod so mad, lucky for this guy when he went to get out of his car (presumably to try and beat us out of towners up or something) a truck almost took his door off and he thought twice about it and got back in his little sports car and took off. If he didn't leave he may have had his face re arranged by 3 very tired and angry Victorians!!!!!!
Oh well I guess we all know what ppl say about men in sports cars ..... makes up for what they are lacking in another department !!!!!
Anyway I am glad that everyone made it home safely!. It was an awesome weekend despite the gods above slightly letting us down !
🤘
Good to read all the roomies made it home safe and sound. Hope I didn't wake anyone by having the shower before I left on Sunday, have figured out I wasn't too loud on the last night as I now have the cold from hell and a dripping nose that drugs won't stop (other drugs - not my usual ones)
Got the square into Leons Motors yesterday to try and work out why it was pi**ing oil out, broken breathe rtube and o rings. So was a good trip home at o'dark o'clock.
That must have been one hell of a trip Chris, hats off to you.
Empikg and possum head 🙂, I was wrong, the vents are louvred into the rear lid, so its not what we thought it might be. And after all that I left my flash kit behind!! That was it in the fridolin!! Now I have to figure out how to get it from Sydney to Newcastle!
'Ah, whatever................'
glad to hear you made it home ok chris. we made the trek from valla to goulburn on monday and then to melb today.
As mscabrio said ^^^^^ uneventful except for wanker who stopped in front of me and one detour coz we missed a turn - AGAIN!!! lol...
oval did pretty well.. she was happy to cruise at 100-110 behind the two newbies on the freeway.
see.... air and water do mix 😉

glad you got home safe chris. good to catch up with you on way. hofefully ill be tagging along in 08. rob.
Rod and Trace good to see you guys got home safe too. I have some pics of you guys I took when we passed you on the way to sydney.
But I left my camera at my parents place up Nrth so will post them up later.
to all:
Yup, i did it all pretty much alone. I had to leave halfway through the presentations (rude i know, but I had a tight time schedule to keep). I came across a broken down rat oval - i helped out as much as I could, but the Penroses(?) who were helping knew what they were doing obviously, tried to keep up with a gaggle of 3 kombis/splits, came across a notch along the way, and swapped positions with a blue and white splity (AO.00??) coz I was taking photos on the side of the road several times!
Fuel consumpsion was about 8.5-9L/100kms... yes. not per km.. I think i filled up at every second servo i came across..
I'm glad everyone got home without any serious dramas - it's shitty that you get roadrage on a long journey back Rod, Trace n' Kate. I think you guys deserve a special shout out because there's three of you, and yet, you went to effort of taking 3 separate bugs up to Valla. Fuel costs be dammed! Great effort you guys.
OL & Nick: 16 hours?! holy crap. That's Gestapo hard cores styles. Glad your shift sleeping/driving worked out well.
Dean: You're a nutter too: Valla to Euroa... you musta been hitting some serious cases of the ZZZZ's. I know i did at times... I was crazy body dancing in my car to stay awake at times.. that and Red Bulls from those RB chickies..
Chris: I was out like a light - i didn't hear a thing!
Great to meet all those that I did (and remember thier names): Birchall, Scott, Matt, Rob, Chris, John, Bernie, the other Dave...
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
Karmann ran like a dream there and back. Just needed regular fuel infusion every 250 to 300k's. Fuel economy was absolutely crap at 12 to 13ltr per 100.
Dean time to get yourself a MicroTeck and some electroic parts...
hey chris hopefully next time my bug will be up to the trip and we can get an eastside convoy going!!
