Was at a local wrecking yard with a couple of friends while they were getting some Subi parts and I spotted something in the holding yard that I didn't expect to see. It was a 62 Notchback.

The car is partially disassembled but complete, with the guards, windows, bumpers and stuff packed inside. There doesn't appear to be any actual rust holes, just lots of surface rust. Apart from a dent on the boot lid and a small one on the rear of the roof, the car is absolutely undamaged with no repairs or touchups. The paint is original and is a very light greyish green. The motor also appears to be original and looks in good condition, although internally it could be shagged yet. I'll find out if it starts when I get it home in a couple of days.

Somebody obviously didn't know what this car was when they asked the wreckers to take it away. It's the ultimate resto project, as being partially disassembled, you can easily see the condition of the internal panels too.

How much did I pay? A hefty sum indeed. $150.

OK, this is a pic of the car "as is, where is"... It may look bad to some, but remember, it's dismantled for resto already, and there's no real rust, just surface stuff. As far as restos go, this one will be a dream.

After a second look and a bit of deduction, it appears someone started working on taking it apart, then died. It's come from a VW person, as the extra Beetle guard in the back suggests. I'd say someone did a cleanup of a property they've inherited and didn't know that this old car had some value.

Yep Pete, it has what appears to be the original motor, and from the outside it looks in really good nick, but I will only know when I get it home in a couple of days if it'll wind over or start.

I did think about leaving it as a rat, as the body doesn't need anything for roadworthy axcept bolting the guards/bumpers back on. But no, at this point I think I'll prep it and paint it in it's original "velvet green". It's not a colour I would have chosen before, but on this car it looks great (and it's got a nice creamyness to it) and it would be cool to keep it in the original colour. I am podering the possibility of sneaking probably a coffee coloured twin racing stripe onto it, just for my own touch. I want to knock up my own steel and timber roof rack too.

I'll definitely be putting a complete new interior in it, stitching the roof lining and door panels myself. I'll track down a friend with a bigger machine to do the stitching on the seats. Not sure what colour to do the inside in yet.

Oh, and gotta have whitewalls of course (and sit it lower in the weeds).

Got the little fella home now and started digging through it to see what's there. Some door panels are missing, but all the brown seats are in nice condition. Only 1 bumper, but all 4 fenders are in good nick with no rust holes at all. The driver's side floor has a bit of rust in the rear because of a leaky battery, which is easily fixed.

Heater chanels, front corners, inside the lower front, all the usual bad rust areas are perfect and rust free. Even the sills are good.

Looks like it just needs a bumper (rear I think, too dark now to check), front and rear screens and the rest I have on my parts shelves.

Brisdubba, mate, that motor powered my buggy just fine. If there was anything wrong with it, I wasn't aware of it. I think it would do you good to pull your head in and stop defacing my posts. Get a friggin life man...

Mainly for my kids' sake (and secretly for my own), I hung the front fenders on the little girl and sprayed a couple of quick stripes on where the coffee coloured ones will go on the finished paint. Oh, she's got a name now... Ophelia.

could the original colour be Birch Green ?

You're right (1964_notch), it is Birch Green. Before I looked it up the other day, I was misinformed that it was Velvet Green, which is a darker colour with a little olive tone to it. I'm definitely sticking with the Birch Green, but I'm putting Safari Beige racing stripes up it. The upholstery is going to be redone in Aero Red with Aero Beige inserts and piping (Ghia colours). The idea is to stick with VW colours from the early/mid 60s.

Although I'm going to keep the appearance of this little car as though it could be a 60s original, there'll be some hidden extras. I've got electric window actuators that are going in it, and central locking with remote. The windows will be operated by the original winders, but they'll act as switches instead. Also going into it are hidden speakers and amplifier with a plug under the dash for my MP3 player. Oh, and the rear boot will get electric release as well...

While I've got the pan out from under her, I'll be dropping the front and rear a little too. I'll be sticking with original wheels without hubcaps, but with the stainless trims and red stripe tyres.
