Got a 1600 (thanks Andy) to go into my 62 Beetle, which is a 6v 1200 (dead motor). What gearbox etc., stuff do I need, or will it just go in? I assume not, and know stuff all about Beetles.

Thanks.

It will go in, but you will notice when you try to put the engine in, the 12v flywheel won't quite fit into the bell housing but you can make it fit with an angle grinder 🙂

Next you will have to consider the eletric things.

The generator, coil, auto-choke are 12v. Your 6volt system is not compatible with this.

To upgrade the rest you'l have to think about

Lights, battery, starter motor...

Probably more, but at least you know what problems you may face. Do some searches here for 12v conversion.

from memory a 12 volt starter needs a bush fitted to the bell housing to fit a 6 volt tranny
also the 71 onward trannys have a different throw out bearing with the guide sleeve which uses a differernt pressure plate
i cant remember if that affects anything
ive put a 74 engine in my 70 bug with a sleevless type 3 box but i havent driven it since so not sure if it works yet

Why not try and get a 6 volt 1600 flywheel and stay 6 volt if all is working ok. Saves a lot of other changing.

You are right, you need the pressure plate with the disc in the centre.

You will need to grind out the bellhousing, change the bush for the starter, change the pressure plate, modify the rear tinware due to the smaller engine bay, change some basic wiring and bulbs etc to suit the 12v electrics and you're done:thumb
