hi there a newbie here

i have a 77 kombi 2lt which is chewing the fuel up
i think way to much, i am only getting about 320kms to a tank and my last 2lt kombi i had did about 550kms to a tank which i beleive is about 10lts /100kms both results have been tested on long trips
would like to know if downsizing the jets in my carbies (standard solexes)
might give me better fuel consumption its the last thing i can think of without major mods (eg. fuel injection)

have even tried leaning my mixtures but what i find is if i lean it to much the idle starts to become erratic

what i also find odd is i was under the impression that the mixture screws are 2-3 turns out and this kombi is only 1.5 and that is as lean as i can have it without effecting the idle

can anyone shed any light please
thanks
jay

No

However making sure you have the right size jets and having the car in tune will save you fuel

the mixture screws will vary from each engine

dont forget your pushing a BRICK through the air most of my mates get teh same fuel econ as you have statted with there vans
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Running lean is considered a bad thing in general. Ends up with an overheated engine and dropped valves... I only get about 350km to a tank also, in town. Much better on a country road though. 1800 twin stock solex tired old clanker.

I wouldn't run my busses lean.

Cheers, A.

when you change the mixture you're only changing it at idle... the only way to change the mixture at ramming speeds is to change the jets as you've said, and these are selected by volkswagen to go with your engine like peas and carrots so you shouldnt change them.

I'm of the belief that if some other bugger can get 550k's/tank in an 2litre then thats what i'd want to get out of mine! Sooooo, i would start looking at all the little efficiency things that will make your bus run well

- compression, valves, timing, new plugs, dissy working effectively
- carbs balanced, no air leaks on the throttle spindles or vac leaks. The bloody carbs on these type IV engines have to be spot on, apparently.
- tyres at correct pressure and all pointing in same direction
- brakes not binding at all

I suppose if your last kombi got good mileage then youre driving style with this one is the same.

These are my thoughts for what they're worth, good luck mate! (And i cant really talk cos my 1800 runs poo!)

Hi,
Your engine will run cooler and Your engine and Valves will last a lot longer with a RICH Mixture...

Its VERY Important to NOT run Your carbies Lean...
Better to go out another turn...

BUT... Someone may have put larger jets in Your carbies or drilled the original ones out...

Cheapest way would be to get replacement stock jets and then check Your Jets against them....

Kombies, type 2s don't get good economy...
Larger the engine.... More fuel they use....
Type 4 engines weren't any better....

My 1600 Beetle uses a lot more fuel than My 1835cc Lancer....

But You need to adjust Your mixture screw before its too late.... URGENT....

Hi again Jay,
Make sure Your engine is tuned correctly as My Son had a beetle that used a lot of fuel, it does have very large jets in the carby , but after the ignition was done with a strobe lamp and the 009 at 32 degrees advance....

Uses much less fuel... large jets still there....

But can't stress enough that the Mixture screws must be a little on the Rich side.... [Lean mixtures kill VW engines]
Large Jets are probably keeping it cool...?

unless the main jets are ridiculously large in which case ur plugs would foul up and engine would run like crap changing to smaller ones wont really affect the fuel consumption

i tried an experiment in my beetle a few months ago
its a 1600 with some headwork a engle 110 and elect ign
with my twin carbs running 130 mains i was averaging 9.5L/100km
with these off and the single 34pict3 back on i had to run a 140 main and got 10L/100km which i thought was to big so i put in a 127.5 jet and tried it with the same milage but a horrible flat spot and a car that just hated running below 2000rpm
a 130 and 135 mains where the same till finally i realised 140 altho big was the best overall for my engine
car pulls fine in top gear from 1200 upto 5200rpm and the plugs are a perfect colour

Good one Joel,
I love to read about experiments with Beetle engines

thats very interesting

I presume the engine will go best when it has the required amount of fuel...
well fuel/air mixture...

thanks Joel

Hi
I don't mean to hijack this post BUT I run a 34pict 3 carb on my 1600dp .
Well the one on the car started to leak fuel every where so I put another 34pict 3 I had laying around the house and It runs like when DUB74L had the small main jet in, so i was thinking maybe this has a small jet in it for say a 1200.

I have pulled a few carbs apart to clean them but I am not sure which is the main jet, Could you please tell me which it is so I can swap it over from the old carb as this one ran well but for the leak.

Thanks heaps

Marc

Mark the main jet is behind the nut at the back of float chamber.Undo hex nut and unscrew jet with a screwdriver.Size 130 left 127.5 right 68 to 71.127.5 on both after 71.

thanks everyone for all your help and quick responses
i appreciate the support and will definately take all your advice on board and hopefully be able to fix my dilemma
its not running lean but is on the borderline of lean
so i will make sure i richen the mixture
i love my bus and would easily put up with poor fuel economy just so i can keep it
will be sure to use this forum in future and hopefully through my experiences i can help someone else

thanks again

i've always heard vws are very under carbed engines but i still thought it would have used more fuel with twin carbs
but that said i do notice with them on its alot more relaxed and defianlty doesnt need as much pursuasion to get up the same hills
